37
BYO orange slices because Queensland Theatre is taking us to the footy field with its latest theatre production 37. Backdropped by the era of Adam Goodes’ war-cry, the play has gained its name from the prolific player’s immortalised number and deals head first with the entangled world of Aussie sport, race and community.
The play follows the Cutting Cove Currawongs – sporting underdogs and laughing stock of their small coastal town. They’re so stuck at the bottom of the footy ladder, they may as well be rusted on. The fate of the team changes when players Jayma and Sonny arrive in town and transform the Cutting Cove Currawongs into winners. Ball is their namesake, with the two Marngrook cousins gaining their names from the Aboriginal game that inspired AFL. As the team rises up the ladder to capture the flag for its very first time, it turns out not everyone’s a fan of these young guns.
37 is a loud, brash match between top dogs and underdogs with some serious bite. Featuring an ensemble of ten performers, this work out of a production promises to be a little sweary – and very sweaty.
