Make: Grown-up Brussels Sprouts

Brussels sprouts got a bad wrap as a kid. Perhaps it was because they resembled mini cabbages or because anything green was clearly out to poison you and not make you healthy and strong. But now that we’re all grown up and Brussels sprouts are no longer merely steamed, but served with lashings of cheese, garlic and pine nuts, a bowl of their golden roasted goodness looks particularly appetising. more

Traditional coffee brewing: The Chemex Method

German inventor Peter Schlumbohm invented the Chemex Coffee Method in 1941. An infusion technique that crafts a body and taste similar to that of drip coffee, the Chemex method uses a paper filter in the hourglass-shape beacon to yield a smooth, elegant brew. This video by Sprouted Kitchen walks you through the ingredients, tools and processes needed to make this type of pour over at home. Image via Sprouted Kitchen.   more

Help bring the street food culture to Brisbane

When you’re travelling overseas, sometimes it’s the simplest, cheapest of meals that can be the most rewarding. Wrapped in a serviette or served on paper plates, street food delivers the flavours and culture at the heart of a country. Sydney has the Veggie Patch Van and Melbourne has the Taco Truck and, until Hellhound Hotdogs and The Bun Mobile rolled along, Brisbane was feeling a little out of the loop. more

The Street Photographer: Scrumptious Reads

From novels and memoirs to historic tales and, of course, recipe books, Scrumptious Reads in Fortitude Valley offers compendiums of a nourishing variety. Stocking a finely curated selection of food and drink books and magazines, Scrumptious Reads is the loving creation of Julie Tjiandra and Reyna Portillo. Tomes are meticulously organised into categories of meat, bread, cheese, wine, fish and more amongst apple tree bookcase shelving. You can even find whole cookbooks dedicated to sourdough and specialty books across more niche eating fields like organics, coeliac and vegan literature. For this James Street store, Julie and Reyna enlisted the help of architect Marina Kozul and designer Fukutoshi Ueno to create a design-savvy interior, which Julie is slowly translating across to her newly acquired cafe space next door, dubbed Sugar Jar Cafe. Add Fainá to your afternoon cheese board

A traditional foodstuff of Argentina and Uruguay is Fainá – a flatbread with notes of pepper made from chickpea flour. A great gluten-free option for cheese boards, fainá can also be served with toppings, though is traditionally served as an accompaniment to pizza – a little triangular slice sitting atop your larger pizza portion. Chickpea or garbanzo bean flour can be found at most health food stores. We picked up ours from Wray Organic. more
