The Street Photographer: Fifth Battery Coffee Roasters
The Gowty family has built themselves a little coffee empire, with four Brother Espresso cafes and the Bread & Butter general store now under its wing. At the heart of these cafes is their own brand of coffee, roasted out of a warehouse-meets-cathedral-like space in the side streets of Fortitude Valley. Opened in 2010, Fifth Battery Coffee Roasters is a half-cylindrical space where the roastery mixes with an expansive cafe. Metal caging and stained glass separate the half-pipe into open sections, with a street-art decorated, sun-lit counter and roaster space at the front and a leafy, aviary-esque nook at the back. Named after Grandfather E. G. Gowty, who was drafted to the 5th Battery 2/2 Heavy Anti-aircraft Regiment in World War II, Fifth Battery Coffee Roasters is a chilled spot for a light breakfast accompanied by a mean cup of specialty espresso that’s been sourced, secured and roasted in small batches. Of a morning try the brioche toast served with cinnamon maple pears or the ever-delicious Breakie Burger featuring fresh avocado, prosciutto crudo, vintage cheddar, a sunny-side-up egg and aioli on organic sourdough. Lunchtime offerings include a Chorizo Quinoa, Sand Crab Lasagne and soup of the day.
