Strawberry sundae danishes and Gaytime lamingtons – where to find Ekka-inspired treats in Brisbane
Can you feel it? The palpable tingle of excitement in the air, the distant aroma of dagwood dogs frying and the faint rustle of show bags being filled? It’s Ekka time, baby! The annual agricultural show is on again and Brisbane is gearing up to celebrate. Beyond the confines of the Brisbane Showgrounds, a number of local eateries are getting into the spirit with their own Ekka-inspired creations. If you’re keen to experience some show-day goodness without the crowds, seek out these treats around town.
Lune’s Strawberry Sundae Danish
This year, world-renowned croissant maker Lune Croissanterie is getting in on the Ekka action with a limited-edition, Brisbane-exclusive pastry inspired by the yearly carnival’s most-popular item, the strawberry sundae. Throughout August, Lune’s South Brisbane headquarters on Manning Street will be serving a super-special strawberry sundae danish. This item sees Lune’s famous flaky pastry filled with strawberry compote, waffle cone crumble and strawberry mousse, before being crowned with a single fresh strawberry. Lune is sourcing its strawberries from Tinaberries, a sustainability minded farm located near Bundaberg and the Coral Coast. Lune’s strawberry sundae danish will be available Monday through Friday from 7:30 am until sold out, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 am until all gone.
Golden Gaytime lamington at Jocelyn’s Provisions
It’s hard to have a Gaytime alone, so we suggest rounding up a crew and heading to Jocelyn’s Provisions to pick up a pack of its new limited-edition Golden Gaytime lamingtons. This covetable treat sees a cube of sponge cake dipped in light caramel and then coated with a biscuit crumb. The item is then split and filled with caramelised whipped white chocolate ganache and whipped white chocolate cream. Jocelyn’s Provisions will be selling these beauties in store from August 9–11, Wednesday August 14 and August 17–18.
Nodo’s strawberry and cream doughnut (and strawberry sundae)
Beloved confection maker Nodo is indulging in Ekka fever this year, launching a limited-edition strawberries-and-cream doughnut that will be available for one day only. All Nodo stores will stock the pink-frosted treat on the Ekka public holiday, which is Wednesday August 14, in case you forgot. That’s not all – throughout August, Nodo will also be serving an iced strawberry sundae, fusing strawberry gum sauce, white chocolate, vanilla, milk and sweet cream mascarpone foam, and freeze-dried strawberries on top.
Mourning Roast’s strawberries-and-cream latte
The crew behind Stones Corner coffee joint Mourning Roast is injecting a bit of colour into our caffeinated sips this month, debuting a special Ekka-themed drink that’s available until August 18. The strawberries-and-cream latte – a vivid beverage blending strawberries (duh), cream and coffee for a tasty tweak on your morning pick-me-up.
Mini dagwood dogs at The Alliance
The team at Spring Hill pub The Alliance Hotel has added some Ekka-inspired additions to its menu of grouse grub. Throughout Ekka season (Aug 10–18), the venue’s kitchen will be serving mini dagwood dogs with sipping sauce, as well as saucy pork ribs with mac ‘n’ cheese and house-made slaw. Either option will go superbly alongside a serve of The Alliance’s now-famous fried-cocodile bites and kangaroo tartare.
Goldfinch’s Ekka-inspired menu
Brisbane City restaurant Goldfinch is pulling out all of the stops for its Ekka-themed offering. The eatery will be serving its own version of a dagwood dog (served with tomato sauce, naturally), a strawberry sundae (featuring vanilla and strawberry gelato, raspberry puree, waffle, profiterole hazelnuts, Oreos and raspberries) and a pumpkin scone (a pumpkin-infused buttermilk scone with cream and strawberry jam). Goldfinch’s rooftop-bar sibling, Sixteen Antlers, is also serving a clutch of Ekka-inspired cocktails, with the Clarified Strawberry Sundae (boasting Bacardi Carta Blanca, Bols strawberry liqueur, apple and lime juice, Monin strawberry syrup, and clarified milk) our pick of the bunch.
Stone & Wood’s Strawberry Sundae Kisses beer
A staple of Ekka season, Stone & Wood’s Strawberry Sundae Kisses traditional Berliner Weisse-style beer is back. When the Ekka was on a pandemic-related hiatus in 2020, the team at Stone & Wood linked up with The Common Good to concoct a strawberry-infused sip to help raise funds for life-changing medical research. Needless to say, the craft-beer collab was a hit, with the brilliantly pink-hued brew selling out in a snap every year since. Stone & Wood’s Fortitude Valley hub is slinging sudsy schooners of the limited-edition beer, which brewed with kilos of fresh strawberries, lactose and vanilla – a mixture that creates a creamy beverage boasting a strawberry-led bomb of flavour.
