The Prince and the Prostitute

Calling all history buffs and theatre lovers! A little known slice of Australian history in the form of a musical will be playing on Saturday October 22 at the Queensland Multicultural Centre.

The Prince and the Prostitute tells the story of Queen Victoria’s second son, Prince Alfred and one of his favourite Melbourne prostitutes, as well as a shocking attempted royal assassination. While undertaking the first Royal tour of the Empire in 1867, Prince Alfred is subject to an attempted  assassination by a ‘mad’ Irishman who was training to become a Catholic priest. The attempt on his life exacerbated existing religious tensions brought over from the old country and the nationalistic ferment it caused meant that the assassin was hastily executed in perhaps a miscarriage of justice led by an opportunistic politician.

Be sure to wear your waterproof mascara and bring a tissue, as this tragic love story between the Prince and the prostitute is woven into a historical tale which will show you the human behind the royal facade. The story deals with themes including freedom, royal lust, female oppression, patriotic revenge,  class distinction, political cunning, naked ambition, religious corruption and racial discrimination, themes which still resonate with us today.

The cast of sexually promiscuous Emperor’s and Princes, subjugated women, corrupt hedonistic colonial officials, disaffected Irish immigrants, a greedy bishop, republicans, conservatives and a founding father of Australia, will entertain you with a mix of soft jazz and blues with classical, rock and hip hop music.

Showing for one night only, be sure to snag some tickets by heading to the Queensland Multicultural Centre website.
