SWEET!

SWEET!

The finalists for SWEET! 2015/2016 have been announced…

Over the next 12 months Brisbane Powerhouse will welcome our newest SWEET! selections: Hanako (Ellen Belloo), The Long-Toothed Devil (Polytoxic) and Versions of the Truth (All the Queens Men).

The second announcement follows the 2014-15 program of acclaimed productions including He Dreamed a Train (Margie Brown-Ash), Flaunt (Claire Marshall) and Oscar Wilde’s De Profundis(Brian Lucas and David Fenton).

Hanako by Ellen Belloo / Directed by Caroline Dunphy
A new multi-form performance work, Hanako will plunge you into the hyper-realistic fantasy of a young girl’s precarious journey into an imagined future. Actor-director Caroline Dunphy brings her wealth of experience in Japanese performance practice to this compelling re-imagination of a classic Nõ tale.

The Long-Toothed Devil by
Polytoxic / Created by Lisa Fa’alafi and Leah Shelton
Driven by Artistic Directors Leah Shelton, Lisa Fa’alafi and the Polytoxic team, expect a mash-up of pop-art, neo-tiki, physicality and striking design in this multi-arts performance. The Long-Toothed Devil will invite you to step inside an immersive horror-tiki hut for a suspenseful experience inspired by ghost stories from Samoa.

Versions of Truth by
All the Queens Men / Created by Tristan Meecham
Produced by All The Queens Men, Versions of Truth will travel down a rabbit hole of deceit revealing in essence how we all trade in secrets and lies. Partly based on a shocking and personal real-life events, this story will challenge our notion of identity, truth, performance, and personal representation.

About SWEET!

We’re calling upon Queensland’s most inspiring, ambitious and rigorous performance artists to share their new creative ideas with us, with the view to presenting them inside the walls of Brisbane’s most iconic performance venue.

SWEET! is Brisbane Powerhouse’s season for new contemporary performance. Quite simply, it is an artist-led program focused on assisting local performance makers to create and manage their own work, supported heavily by the infrastructure and resources of a major multi-arts venue.

Registration for SWEET is broad and inclusive. There are no cultural, age-related or stylistic requirements or restrictions.  Registered works can draw on digital and sound art; dance or movement; and/or text-based theatre. Creative teams can be of any age or cultural origin. We openly encourage those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to apply.

What we offer:

  • AUD$10,000 to contribute to your production budget.
  • A two-week performance season in the Visy Theatre – free of all venue hire charges.
  • Three weeks of rehearsal space – free of all venue hire charges.
  • 80% of net box office income – gross revenue minus Brisbane Powerhouse ticketing costs.
  • Production crew and FOH staffing to support you in the venue (the 20% of box office income that comes BACK to Brisbane Powerhouse will cover all of your staffing).
  • Venue partnership support for further funding applications.
  • Support to develop a specialised marketing campaign with assistance from the Brisbane Powerhouse marketing team (with inclusion in and on the Brisbane Powerhouse program and website).
  • Regular meetings with our Production and Programming teams to discuss the creative aspects of the project, technical specifications, budgeting, scheduling and future presentation opportunities.
