La Boite Theatre is wrapping up its trailblazing season of mainstage productions with a pop-culture fuelled world premiere that is full of razor-sharp dialogue, iconic costumes, belly laughs and a whole lot of heart. Taking over La Boite’s Roundhouse Theatre from November 6–25, IRL will take you back to your youth in a ferociously funny reflection of what it means to be a teenager searching for love, acceptance and community. Equal parts humour and heart, IRL follows the story of Alexei, a 17-year-old with an affection for cosplay, who often gets lost in the fictional stories he tells about himself. When Alexei and his internet crush Thaddeus agree to meet up IRL (in real life), the narrow line between fantasy and reality begins to wobble widely out of control. Written by Brisbane playwright Lewis Treston, the brainchild behind La Boite’s 2022 smash-hit An Ideal Husband, IRL is for anyone who has experienced a crush, first love, been a teenager, found solace in their imagination or questioned their identity.
