derlot designs The Pantry at Old Government House

It’s not every day a designer gets to work on a heritage building, let alone one as stunning as Old Government House. So when Nick Abbink of Zen Catering approached the derlot studio to envisage the interior of a new cafe within the heritage-listed building at QUT Gardens Point, Alex Lotersztain eagerly jumped at the opportunity.

With Nick’s original ideas for his new project The Pantry, the pair devised a look that would bring a derlot-tinted punch to the space. The space previously housed the BarMerlo cafe, so the basic kitchen requirements were already built in. With these technical specifications sorted, the focus turned to getting the most out of the layout. The new interior is engaging and warm, bringing a modern design element to the building, without overshadowing the heritage framework.

Taking the approach of minimal vintage, Alex balanced the white crisp lines with vintage and recycled elements to create a cosy and human touch that aligns with the history of the building. The hero of the space is the long bar, which was made in white corian and glued together on-site. Vintage industrial pendant lights were sourced from Germany and derlot edition’s Picket stools and tables are scattered throughout, crowned with recycled timber tops. Succulents and indoor plants add to the melee of found period objects and knick knacks, while vintage picture frames and a rustic wooden ceiling balance the fresh white walls and industrial lamp shades.
