Enjoy a double scoop of goodness at La Macelleria’s new West End gelateria

It’s not unusual for people to travel across town to get their fix of authentic Italian gelato from La Macelleria, and if you don’t understand why then you clearly haven’t tried it. La Macelleria’s Teneriffe gelataria has been putting smiles on dials for years with its signature brand of authentic Italian gelato, which is why it is a really big deal that a second location has just opened in West End. Yep, that’s right – La Macelleria is now open on Montague Road, meaning those south of the river don’t have to travel to get some gelato in their gob. We still would, though – it’s just that damn good.

The idea of opening a second location for La Macelleria Gelateria’s burgeoning dessert empire was something that owner Matteo Zini had entertained, but it wasn’t until he spied the Light + Co development on Montague Road that the vision came together and Matteo decided to act. After securing the space for his West End location, Matteo started installing a fully equipped kitchen to cater to the inevitable demand from local hordes, including an authentic automatic gelato machine from Bologna, Italy. La Macelleria West End is conceptually similar to its Teneriffe sibling, serving the gelateria’s iconic range of freshly made classic and specialty gelato, sorbets, cakes, gelato sticks and espresso from Segafredo, which is a great combo when paired with Light + Co’s other recent opening Lupa Pizza Bar.

Sceptics out there wondering what could possibly make La Macelleria Gelateria as good as we say it is (other than the taste) need only cast a glance over Matteo’s mission statement to be convinced. La Macelleria’s gelato is made without preservatives, colourants, additives and hydrogenated vegetable fats, making it as clean a gelato as possible. Only natural stabilisers are used, including guar, tara and xhanthan gum, while all nuts are roasted and ground on site before being turned into paste. And if that wasn’t enough, La Macelleria is dedicated to supporting local artisans and growers, incorporating buffalo ricotta from Casa Motta, honey from Bee One Third and raisins from Tabletop Grapes in its processes. That’s the kind of transparency you don’t get from many outfits.

La Macelleria Gelateria is now open! If you are keen to get your scoop on, check the Stumble Guide for opening hours and contact details.
