Gerwyn Davies: Subtropics

Gerwyn Davies: Subtropics

Bright colours, camp objects, and familiar scenery dominate the picture plane for Gerwyn Davies upcoming exhibition ‘Subtropics’. Akin to leisure and recreation postcards, the series of photographs is informed by the aesthetics of the Australian lifestyle. Rife with contrivance these consciously constructed sets and elaborate costumes become a site for Davies’ to perform obscure narratives in a process of self-imaging. Subtropics is a tribute to Australian made camp and sinking into the above ground pool of our tepid cultural cringe.

Davies’ practice combines costume making and photography, fundamentally concerned with the fabrication of elaborate, bricolage constructions that utilise everyday materials in imaginative ways to explore the use of dress in self-representation.
