Poboy Cajun & Creole brings gumbo to the Gold Coast

Take your tastebuds on a culinary adventure into America’s deep south and the birthplace of jazz at Coolangatta’s brand new New Orleans-style eatery, Poboy Cajun & Creole.

The soulful sounds of Magic Slim and company drift down the esplanade accompanied by a tantalising aroma of spices, offering the first sensory taste of Poboy Cajun & Creole. Follow your ears and nose around the path from George’s Paragon and you’ll stumble upon the Gold Coast’s first New Orleans-style restaurant. Pull up a stool and munch on a massive po’boy sandwich that is loaded with crispy southern-style fried chicken, shrimp, blackened beef or the house special fried oysters or plunge a fork into a hefty serve of jumbalaya; a Louisiana Creole rice-based dish of Spanish and French influence. For the true soul food experience though, grab a bowl of gumbo with chicken or seafood. A hybrid between a stew and soup, the popular dish is one of the best examples of the multicultural meltingpot that is New Orleans cuisine.

The venue prioritises flavour over spectacle so there is no unnecessary pomp at Poboy Cajun & Creole. The casual eatery is the work of two local chefs and brothers, Josh and Brock Clapin, and their aunty Michele Clapin, who are all completely infatuated with New Orleans’ culture and history. For now, Poboy’s is BYO however there is a liquor license is in the works. Keep an eye and ear out because there are plans for live music on weekends and a monthly boil up that will be based on the New Orleans tradition of the crawfish boil where families gather around long tables and the food is poured onto newspaper down the length of the table.
