Cop a flavour hit at Brisbane City’s authentic Malaysian street-food spot Roti Place

A love of bread is a something that is shared across geographical boundaries. Spend a bit of time looking into various flatbread variations across the globe and you’ll find the proof. Naan, focaccia, lavash, chepati, tortillas – carb cravings are common all around the world. We’re not the kind of folks that will unnecessarily rank these kinds of breads, but even we have to admit we’ve got a soft spot for roti. Incredibly diverse in its own right, the buttery staple of numerous South Asian cuisines is one of the core focuses of Roti Place, a Malaysian eatery that has just opened a striking new location on Charlotte Street in Brisbane City.

Roti Place first burst onto the Brisbane foodie scene in 2015, immediately looking to fill the gap in the market for quality Malaysian cuisine. Its original Albert Street location was a humble outlet, but it scored high praise for its authentic approach to the cuisine. Taking initial inspiration from Sydney and Melbourne’s award-winning Malaysian eatery Mamak, Roti Place honed in on a menu that emphasised bold flavours and local ingredients, putting it high on the lists of those that know quality when they taste it. The past 12 months have seen some growth for Roti Place, which opened a second location in West End before setting its sights on a larger inner-city space. The end of March saw Roti Place open fresh digs on Charlotte Street, inside the former home of Little Singapore. Foot traffic will notice the makeover, which includes a brighter interior aesthetic, a new colour scheme on the building’s exterior and a roti kitchen at the rear of the space, where experts make the flaky flatbreads fresh to order.

The menu at Roti Place naturally starts with its namesake. Both savoury and sweet roti is available, served with the likes of curry chicken or rendang beef, filled with stringy mozzarella cheese or even homemade pandan-infused coconut jam. From there, the menu branches out into an array of iconic Malaysian street-food dishes that have been given some slight twists, from Hainanese chicken with rice, nasi lemak, char kuey teow, Malaysian fish curry, and butter-herb crab (the latter of which is caught fresh on the Gold Coast). The food is backed by a beverage list that features the likes of Malaysian iced teas, salted lemonade, hot teas and more. A forthcoming tap system will bring with it draught beers to go with a curated selection of wines.

Roti Place is now open on Charlotte Street. For opening hours and contact details, seek out Roti Place’s entry in our Stumble Guide.
