Short film: Cafe Regular, Cairo

Culture is an incredibly fascinating and somewhat nebulous term that differs between time and place. Set in the culturally ubiquitous setting of a cafe, Café Regular, Cairo is a short film that eavesdrops on a couple discussing a very taboo topic in a very public setting. As the couple begins to chat about their private life over a coffee, the film not only examines Egyptian culture, but also the strength of a relationship. The endearing film has screened at more than 40 film festivals across the globe, and was followed by director Ritesh Batra’s latest output, The Lunchbox, which won the Viewer’s Choice Award at the recent Cannes Film Festival. Winter comfort food: ale pie

When the wind is brisk, the sky is grumbling and drops of rain are tapping at the roof, few things are as comforting as a tucking into a hearty meat pie pulled fresh from the oven. It can be hard to know what’s lurking in some frozen store-bought pies, so it's best to make your own instead. This recipe is pretty simple, but the meat does need to be slow cooked, making ale pie a perfect lazy Sunday-afternoon option. more

The Grocer: Kimchi

Cabbage may conjure ghastly images of overcooked and tasteless cuisine, but the humble vegetable is the key ingredient of one of Korea’s most prized delicacies, kimchi. The Korean staple consists of cabbage that has been fermented and flavoured with chilli, garlic, salt and vinegar, resulting in a tart, spicy side dish that is served alone, as a side and mixed into meals. more

Foodie film flashback: Big Night

Named as “one of the great food movies” by Roger Ebert, Stanley Tucci’s 1996 film Big Night tells the story of two brothers, Primo and Secondo, who think of food as a language that connects them to God. The film takes place in the 1950s, and Primo and Secondo have just moved to America from Italy to start their own restaurant. Customers are few and far between, but the brothers’ passion for food is unwavering. As the film follows the pair struggling to keep their restaurant afloat, the audience is teased with shots of buttery risotto, freshly rolled pasta dough and rich pasta sauces. Not a film to revisit on an empty stomach. Image via Nerdvampire’s Film Blog. more

Polaroid-style photographs printed onto slabs of fairtrade chocolate, Cocoagraphs are the creation of Californian creative Rae Vittorelli. Bunker collaborates with LICK! Ice Cream to create its own flavours

Marcus Allison from Milton coffee haunt Bunker has teamed up with local providore LICK! Ice Cream to create his own indulgent flavours of ice-cream. With a base of cream, sugar and eggs that is then flavoured with the same coffee beans and couverture chocolate used in Bunker’s coffee and iced chocolates, the ice-cream is decidedly decadent. The 70% Dark Chocolate flavour carries an intense chocolate hit, and the Dark Horse ice-cream is infused with a rich coffee extract. More experiments are planned in the test kitchen to expand upon the two flavours currently available, with Marcus wanting to replicate his other hot chocolate flavours as part of his ice-cream foray.   more
