What does Belgian black cocoa, couverture chocolate, free-range eggs, Australian butter, Queensland cane sugar and gluten-free flour make? Deliciously rich and gooey brownies that were destined to dance on your tastebuds. When Brisbane local Lulu Purnell first started whipping up her 100 percent gluten-free brownies to supply wholesale and at markets a few years ago under the I Heart Brownies moniker, a shop was never on the agenda. But the persistent pleas from loyal brownie addicts led to Lulu deciding to open a seven-day pick-up point. That original decision a year ago has now evolved into the I Heart Brownies Bakery & Cafe in Bakery Lane.

Swing by the artisan bakery to take your pick from flavours like the famous soft-centred salted caramel and peanut butter and jelly, Lulu’s personal favourite the cherry coconut, or other popular choices spanning raspberry, mint and Jaffa. Around 700 brownies are baked on the premises each day, meaning that if you time your visit right you can pop in and grab warm goods fresh out of the oven. Take the heart-shaped treasures away as a pack or grab a seat and indulge in your handmade treats right then and there – along with add-ons like house-made ice-cream if you choose. Round out the indulgence with a Merlo coffee, tea, frappe or shake made on the store’s own preservative- and additive-free syrups. Rest assured, you can still find I Heart Brownies stocked in venues around Brisbane as well as the Jan Powers Farmers Market – Brisbane City every Wednesday, but please note the team is taking a break from the Jan Powers Farmers Market – New Farm on Saturdays.
