Toby’s Estate opens its new flagship cafe in the heart of Newstead

On Wednesday May 1, Newstead locals awoke to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee emanating from a corner space on Longland Street. Acclaimed specialty coffee roaster Toby’s Estate has just opened a brand-new flagship cafe in the heart of Newstead, serving outstanding espresso and filter brews alongside its range of high-end limited-edition Flavour Savour blends and Freezus menu. Come and take a look inside …

There’s never been a better time to be a coffee drinker in Brisbane. While our cafes boast beans from some of Australia’s best roasteries in their grinders, more and more of those acclaimed roasters – including the likes of Industry Beans, Single O and ST. ALi – are establishing physical outposts here in town.

Toby’s Estate is the latest coffee maker to claim a piece of territory in Brisbane, opening a brand-new flagship cafe Longland Street in Newstead this week. Caffeine connoisseurs will know that Toby’s Estate has boasted a bricks-and-mortar presence in Brisbane before, previously operating an espresso bar on Albert Street that shuttered at the outset of COVID-19. But now, Toby’s Estate is back – and this time it’s brought its full award-winning range with it.

“Like most Aussies, Queenslanders love quality coffee,” says Jody Leslie, Toby’s Estate’s general manager. “We’ve had a strong following there for many years, so we thought it was time to give them a chance to encounter our full coffee experience delivered in the Toby’s way.”

Each of Toby’s Estate’s locations – from its Chippendale roastery and cafe to its flagships in Singapore and the Middle East – are designed to have their own character. Melbourne architecture firm Russell & George was recruited to design the Newstead digs, fashioning a fetching retro-tinged interior scheme comprised of raw ply and sustainable vinyl, which meshes with the building’s exposed-brick features to create a sense of comforting warmth.

The focal point of the space is the circular steel-topped coffee bar, the cafe’s nexus of caffeine-dispensing activity. On one side sits a matte-black Slayer espresso machine, which is flanked by a trio of grinders dispensing shots of Toby’s Estate’s popular blends – Woolloomooloo (chocolatey with a hint of butterscotch), Rico (fruity with a touch of honey) and Broadway (a spiced number with a toffee twist). In addition to Toby’s staples, the cafe is also serving the roaster’s Flavour Savours range, blends specially designed to showcase the full flavour potential of coffee beans. Toby’s Estate Newstead will be serving a monthly rotation of Flavour Savours, with 84 coffees showcased throughout the year.

Fans of single-origin brews will get a kick out of the cafe’s extensive menu at the filter bar, which features a curated selection of beans with various origins, processes, varietals and colour profiles. But die-hard coffee geeks might be most interested in Toby’s Estate’s Freezus menu – a selection of standout and award-winning coffees that the Toby’s team has roasted over the years, frozen at their peak and ready to serve for those keen to take their taste buds back in time.

An on-site kitchen is currently dispensing a tight menu of light bites, with the dine-in menu set to grow over time. Grab-and-go pastries also available for those in a rush, but be sure to have a browse of the retail section before you scoot – there’s a huge range of brewing gear and take-home beans available.

In addition to gasbagging with the barista crew about all things caffeine, coffee lovers keen to learn more about the craft are encouraged to sign up to Toby’s Estate’s free monthly coffee tastings, the first of which is taking place on Thursday May 9 at 4:00 pm (you can register for your ticket here). Additionally, Toby’s Estate’s wholesale clients can pop in to sharpen their skills on the cafe’s training machine.

Toby’s Estate Newstead is now open to the public – head to the Stumble Guide for more details.
