Gateaux Cafe + Dessert is the passion project of Nermin Lotfi and Shahira Abdelaziz, two friends with a love of baking who were looking for a cafe that ticked all the boxes – open for coffee and dessert all day and into the evening, friendly to both adults and children, high level of service … the list goes on. Unable to find somewhere that offered all of these things, the friends decided to turn their dream into a reality, finding a quaint spot in leafy Hawthorne. We wouldn’t blame you if a little peep of joy escapes your lips when you first walk in to Gateaux Cafe + Dessert. The space itself is simple, chic and very welcoming – fresh white walls, Tiffany-blue booth seating, bright flowers adorning each table. But the fit-out is not what you’re there for – you’re there for the treats.

Jars of cookies sit upon shelves, baskets on the counter are filled with fresh baguettes, but your eyes will be immediately drawn to the brightly coloured array of sweet delicacies that await you in the cabinet. Eclairs of every flavour (think salted caramel, pistachio, Nutella and more), mille feuille, fruit tarts and lemon meringues are amongst the vibrant temptations, sitting alongside flaky pastries, and housemade sandwiches, quiches, muffins and cakes. Brownie jars (that’s brownie and ice-cream in a jar with a selection of toppings) and waffles add to the sweetness, and if you fancy something a little cooler you can go for the ever-changing selection of Shlix ice-cream flavours.
