Wenley House has a deeply ingrained history of housing fresh produce in Brisbane. Built in 1865 Wenley House was the state’s first market open to the public. Horses drew carriages of fresh produce up from the Brisbane River for three years before demand outgrew the site. The markets then moved to Roma St Parklands before flourishing to a final expansive site at Rocklea, where locals continue to visit each Saturday morning. Situated on Market Street in the city, Wenley House acts as a reminder to where it all began, with its current tenant Malt Dining devoted to keeping the story alive. In the three short months since reopening a refurbished and expanded cafe space, Woolloongabba favourite Foxy Bean has perfected the morning run and is ready to let its saucy, sundown spouse Foxy Drop shine. Open Thursday to Sunday nights, Foxy Drop is a wine and tapas bar, where diners can indulge in a wine and cheese platter or two among the husky, dapper interior or soak up the afternoon ambience in the astroturfed courtyard outside. Moving in to a space that was originally a Chinese takeaway shop that had been there since 1968, new owner Renata Roberts has gutted and re-fitted the shop with Chinese and custom-made furniture and a new kitchen, but she has kept the original signage above the store as a tribute to the locale’s history. more
