Short+Sweet Festival bursts into Brisbane Powerhouse

The best in short theatre works from Brisbane and the Gold Coast will take to the Brisbane Powerhouse stage from Thursday August 21 until Sunday August 30. Presented by Short+Sweet Queensland, the Short+Sweet Festival will feature more than 40 local works of theatre and late-night cabaret in ten-minute bursts. From grisly drama to outlandish comedy to sultry song, the festival will show up to ten plays or six cabaret acts per night, with the audience then voting to send favourites acts through to the gala final on Sunday September 28. more

In its third annual appearance, the not-for-profit festival will showcase Brisbane’s diverse vanguard artistic community from Thursday August 14 to Sunday August 31. From restaurants and bars to traditional live music venues, the Brisbane Fringe Festival stage knows no limits, with the launch party kicking off at The Zoo tonight, before traversing locales like Lock ‘n’ Load, Lucky Duck, Avid Reader, The Tivoli and Black Bear Lodge. more

1984 by George Orwell takes to QPAC

After a sold-out season in 2012, shake & stir theatre co’s production of 1984 by George Orwell returns to QPAC this week. Directed by Michael Futcher, the literary masterpiece turned stage play follows the plight of the citizens of the fictional Oceania – a war-ridden nation, where cameras watch every move. The hero of the story, Winston Smith spends his days rewriting history to align the past with the current political agenda, while by night pursues a forbidden love affair. Running until August 2, this modern interpretation engages the gripping storyline of the original novel, presented against a digital backdrop. more

CATS pounces onto the Brisbane theatre scene

Familiar to many, the songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famed production CATS will come to Brisbane from July 4–6. Starring Marina Prior as Grizabella, the Harvest Rain Theatre Company performance will feature a live band, more than 500 performers from Southeast Queensland and the poetry of T.S Eliot on stage. As the cast claw, crawl and screech around Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, such classic songs as ‘Memory’ will be heard and the moves of celebrated choreographer Callum Mansfield will be seen. The event is set to be the largest production of CATS ever staged in the Southern Hemisphere. more
