1879 thriller A Doll’s House shakes up the status quo
As the anticipation builds for the upcoming Brisbane Festival, some of the nation’s finest creatives are preparing to unleash an adaptation of psychological thriller, A Doll’s House.
More than 100 years after its debut in Copenhagen, the controversial thriller A Doll’s House will make its way to La Boite Theatre’s Roundhouse as part of this year’s Brisbane Festival. Lacing domestic revolution and female empowerment through a tale of marriage and motherhood, the play had a major impact on women’s rights when it was first unveiled in 1879 and even made a mark on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in honour of its historical importance in 2001.
Local theatre goers will be treated to American-Australian playwright Lally Katz and director Steven Mitchell Wright’s adaptation of the Henrik Ibsen classic. But don’t expect any less of an impact – the work of art that caused outrage across Europe in the 19th century is likely to once again ruffle a few feathers as it unearths the dark secrets and lies behind the picture-perfect life of Nora, her husband and three children. Presented by Brisbane Festival and La Boite Theatre Company, A Doll’s House will run from Saturday September 6 to Saturday September 27, with an opening night performance on Wednesday September 10 and a conversation with the artists on Wednesday September 17.
