Carl’s


Named after Brisbane viticulture pioneer Carl Gerler, this intimate 25-seat bistro opened its doors in late 2018 as a temporary pop-up to introduce Gerler Wines. But the Newstead hole-in-the-wall became such a local hit that it’s now here to stay, boasting two- or three-course set menu options for dinner, created by up-and-coming chefs from City Winery and elsewhere around Brisbane. A new chef will take the helm every two nights, meaning loyal customers will always find a new seasonal offering on their plates. Diners also have the option to add matched wines specially selected by former GOMA sommelier Mark Whitaker, who has joined the Carl’s and City Winery team. A bar menu is on offer from 5:00 pm Wednesday through to Saturday, and 3:00–7:00 pm Sunday, dishing up favourites like the 500 g grass-fed sirloin to share, crunchy potatoes with chardonnay vinegar and aioli, and charcuterie board. An a la carte breakfast menu is also available from 8:00 am on weekends, with a bottomless mimosa brunch option bringing the merriment between 10:00 am and midday.
