The round-up: celebrate World Chocolate Day with these must-try chocolate desserts

This Friday July 7 marks a sweet and momentous day in the foodie calendar – World Chocolate Day. To celebrate this truly significant occasion, we put together a respectable list of some pretty fabulous chocolate-themed dishes from various kitchens across the Gold Coast. Be warned though, everything you see here will surely make you weak at the knees.

Chocolate Cookie Pancake Stack at Cowch Dessert Cocktail Bar: Cowch is absolute sweet heaven, and this short stack dripping in chocolate sauce is a real lip-licker. The pancakes are layered with crushed Tim Tam and Oreo biscuits and topped with cookies and cream ice-cream, before being doused in milk chocolate. The chocolate goes hard over the ice-cream scoop, so give it a little crack to watch it all ooze out into one delicious, chocolatey mess. Do you need a moment alone?

Garden Chocolate Patch at Garden Kitchen & Bar: Technically, this one is made and designed to share. Though, if you’re feel like really celebrating World Chocolate Day like the true chocolate lover that you are, then tackle it on your own. There’s no judgement here. The eye-catching platter features chocolate soil, chocolate mushrooms (yes), iced milk-chocolate truffles, flourless chocolate cake and salted caramelised white chocolate ganache.

Mamasan Chocolate Brownie at Mamasan Kitchen & Bar: Mama puts a refined spin on her dessert menu, but the Mamasan Chocolate Brownie takes the cake – it’s topped with toasted sesame ice-cream and a salted caramel fortune cookie for good luck.

Cioccolato Rosso Ferrari at Cucina Vivo: Keep in mind when you’re working your way through the authentic Italian spread here that you must (repeat: must) save some room for the dolce menu. Try the Cioccolato Rosso Ferrari for a theatrical finish – it’s a red chocolate sphere filled with pistachio crostata and stratcciatella ice-cream drizzled with grappa-infused chocolate sauce. Just wait for the ending.

The Donutella Versace from Doughnut Time: If you ask us, it’s always doughnut time. This Friday, though, make sure you get into the spirit of the good stuff and get your chocolate-loving mitts on this mega-doughnut. We say ‘mega’ because it weights a whopping 1kg and features ten different types of chocolate – we kid you not, this 1-kg doughnut will exist in Doughnut Time stores from Friday July 7 through to July 13.

Oreo Creme Brulee at Sparrow Eating House: If you have never tried this molten Oreo delight at Sparrow, then you need to address the situation immediately. Crack open the top and you’ll be exposed to a whole new world of hot, gooey chocolate goodness. Two words – you’re welcome.

Waffle Pop Ice-Cream Sundae at Poppy’s Chocolates: Perched in the middle of The Kitchens, Poppy’s is a no-brainer when it comes to satisfying your chocolate cravings. The sundaes see a bunch of fresh-made golden-brown waffle pops (waffles on a stick) drizzled with melted dark, white and milk chocolate straight from the fancy chocolate taps. That’s right, there’s chocolate on tap at Poppy’s. Don’t worry, there’s a viewing glass to restrain you.

Hot Chocolate Sphere at Elk Espresso: If you’d like a bit of theatrics with your hot chocolate (who doesn’t?) then this is for you. It’s a tempered chocolate ball with vanilla bean marshmallows hidden inside – when you pour the hot chocolate liquid over the ball, it melts and the marshmallows pop out to say ‘hello’. So much chocolate-fuelled fun in one cup.

Chocolate Malteaser Ridiculous Shake at Burgster & Co: We don’t draw the line at the edible – drinkable chocolate is a great vibe. Don’t be fooled by the name – these are legitimately ridiculous. Heck, it’s World Chocolate Day, so anything goes, right? Chase your Burgster burger with the chocolate Malteaser version of the Ridiculous Shakes … or the Nutella Coma version if you’re really living on the edge.

Chocolate Rolls at Justin Lane: Justin always knows the way to our hearts. This cigar-shaped delight is filled with banana, ricotta, chocolate and hazelnuts … and then it’s deep fried to create the perfect chocolate-infused dream.

Chocolate Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches from Sweet Bliss: Anything with chocolate, ice-cream and cookies in its name must be delicious. You’ll find Sweet Bliss at NightQuarter, and whilst their decadent doughnuts with chocolate ganache are always a banger, we’re totally vibing on the ice-cream cookie sambos, filled with rich chocolate ice-cream before being lathered in all the best chocolate toppings.

Big Choc-Top Funnel Cake from World Famous Funnel Cakes: Celebrate World Chocolate Day by dancing your way toward World Famous Funnel Cakes at NightQuarter – order the Big Choc Top, which is a funnel cake topped with ice-cream, hot chocolate fudge and decadent chocolate chips, then tap your toes while the ladies create this sweet magic in front of your eyes.

Absolutely everything you can stomach from Max Brenner: If the Land of Chocolate actually existed, we reckon it would resemble the interior of Max Brenner. Here you can eat, drink, lick or slurp chocolate at any time of day. We’re partial to the Spectacular Choc-Fudge Brownie Sundae – it comes all the trimmings, including waffle balls and a pot of melted chocolate.
