When long-time hospitality pals – Miles Gaebel, Dylan Jamsa and Lee King – opened Side Piece Coffee in Varsity Lakes, their collective vision was to create the kind of venue they wanted to hang out in. As it turns out, the kind of venue they wanted to hang out in was the exact kind of venue that Varsity Lakes locals also wanted to hang out in, and it has became a much-loved fixture on the podium of Capital Court. Almost a year on, the trio has dropped a brand-new menu that farewells some crowd faves, but welcomes some exciting new seasonal additions.

While it’s never easy to let go of a popular dish, the upside, according to Miles, is that it gives people a nudge to try something new. We’re just going to come right out and say it, the chicken sandwich is gone (RIP) but before you go shedding too many tears, in its place we’ve been gifted some new dishes that are definitely no consolation prize. One of the unlikely heroes of the new menu, which landed last week, is the tuna melt. Let’s get one thing straight, when they say tuna melt, it’s not the kind you remember from days past. This particular version is heavy on the pickles with a generous swathe of the tuna mix, offering the perfect hint of nostalgia with a whole lot of flavour. Joining the new line-up is a classic Reuben, a hearty PB + J porridge and salmon bagel, to name just a few. While ‘no changes or substitutions’ is becoming more and more common on menus around town, Side Piece Coffee has always embraced the kind of culinary anarchy that invites you to build-your-own breakfast. Want two-boiled eggs with a side of kimchi at 7:00 am? You do you.

As for the brews component, the coffee remains unchanged with the milk-based coffees featuring DIBS (formerly The Black Lab Coffee Co), alongside a rotating offering of single-origins and blends for black, filter and pour-overs. One of the new additions to the sips selection is matcha alongside Side Piece’s own branded juices that are quirky and tasty. Those in the mood for a little something sweet will find a mouth watering array of treats including cookies, banana bread and slices baked fresh by Brit filling the display cabinet. Rounding out the venue’s mantra of brews, chews and banter, Side Piece’s hands-on owners Miles, Dylan and Lee can usually be found behind the coffee machine, clearing tables, but mostly you’ll find them striking up conversations with customers and having a laugh, creating the kind of atmosphere that is fun and inviting.
