Pavement Whispers: speakeasies, Brazilian grills, all of the coffee hangs, and pasta heaven
From whispers of speakeasy bars to new coffee hubs, The Weekend Edition Gold Coast is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Paper Cup Coffee
Those on the northern end would be familiar with Labrador’s Paper Cup Coffee, which set up shop on Frank Street back in 2015. Now, its caffeine-fuelled wings are spreading slightly south to Ferry Road (in the space formerly occupied by Nandos, neighbouring the BP servo), with a second Paper Cup Coffee venue underway. The new cafe will begin serving coffee and on-the-go savouries and sweets (similar to the current offering at Labrador), before moving slowly moving into a full sit-down breakfast and lunch situation. The new Paper Cup Coffee on Ferry Road will be serving both Blackboard Coffee and Melbourne’s Proud Mary Coffee, to give its hefty following plenty of options. It’s due to open around mid-July – stay tuned for all the details.
The Grill House
The Grill House is an authentic Brazilian barbecue restaurant, due to open in Southport’s foodie hub Australia Fair Metro by early August. Owner Ibrahim Ebid is bringing traditional Brazilian barbecued meats, chicken and seafood to the table, as well as Brazilian beers, in a bright and colourful setting. The fit-out is said to be ‘carnivale’ style, reminiscent of the eclectic culture found in the streets of Brazil. Alongside the authentic eats, we’re told to gear up for live Brazilian dancing and vibrant music. We’re pretty pumped for this – we’ll keep you in the loop when The Grill House doors open.
The Coffee Deck
A new nautical-themed coffee hub is coming to Paradise Waters (just near Tedder Ave). The Coffee Deck, due to open at the end of July, will be serving coffee, breakfast and lunch daily, as well as house-baked treats (including ‘loaded muffins’), smoothies and on-the-go snacks. The former liquor store in the Paradise Waters commercial complex is currently undergoing works to create a rustic and nautical vibe. We’ll keep you posted!
Sorelle Italian
A design-your-own pasta bar is coming to Pacific Fair. Sorelle Italian is set to bring fresh and authentic Italian eats in an on-the-go setting to the centre’s food precinct. Alongside the fresh pasta (which you can either DIY or order from the menu, with the likes of four-cheese gnocchi), you’ll also find fresh-made pizzas and salads, plus moreish smaller eats like Italian-style meatballs and arancini. Sorelle is due to open by next week.
Lockwood
The hidden laneway that connects pizzeria Justin Lane to Burleigh’s West Street is about to get not one but two new hidden bars. We’ve already spilled the beans on NightJar (another venue by Hideaway Kitchen & Bar’s Scott Imlach), which is due to open later this year, but a fly-under-the-radar group of lads from the Byron Bay area are gearing up to open Lockwood by mid-July. We’ve been told of a speakeasy-style bar serving classic cocktails and quality spirits from a cosy brick and timber-clad space, which lies behind Mount Woodgee surf shop. Keep your eyes peeled on The Weekend Edition for all the details when Lockwood’s secret door opens.
