Garlic Kiss brings Mediterranean flavour to Kirra

With a Bosnian father and a Serbian mother, it’s fair to say Tara Jukic’s childhood dinners were a little more exotic than most. It is this unique culinary upbringing and her family’s background owning restaurants in Melbourne that compelled her to open Garlic Kiss cafe in Kirra.

If you fancy something a little bit different from your usual eggs benny, take a seat at Garlic Kiss cafe. The venue offers a little taste of Tara’s Mediterranean heritage alongside a selection of traditional breakfast favourites and simple yet satisfying lunches. If you can fathom pumpkin for breakfast, the pumpkin and dukkah breakky, which is loaded with Persian feta, gooey poached eggs and Egyptian dukkah on crusty sourdough bread, is undoubtedly a crowd-pleaser but it’s also pretty hard to go past the baked beans and chorizo on a chilly morning.

At Garlic Kiss, the emphasis is on flavour (and lots of it) with Tara’s parents overseeing things from the kitchen and adding a few home-style meals to the specials board from time to time. The cakes, which are baked on-site are mighty tempting, but if you’ve never tried homemade baklava, do yourself a favour, it will be the best $3 you spend today. Perched on the corner of Haig and Musgrave Street, Garlic Kiss provides the perfect place to enjoy long, leisurely breakfasts and casual lunches. There are plans to push into the vacant space next door and extend into evening trade so watch this space.
