Treat your taste buds to artisan baked goods at Chevron Island’s new bakery Dipcro Pastry

The humble croissant has experienced a glow-up in recent years. Once a bagged supermarket snack (in Australia, anyway), croissants have become labour-intensive edible works of art, with each one taking upwards of three days to create. Rich, buttery and perfectly flaky, it's no wonder why pastry lovers have embraced the new breed of baked goods with open arms. The latest offering to fuel the city's burgeoning croissant culture is Chevron Island's Dipcro Pastry. Here's everything you need to know ... more

Pastry and piccolos – say bonjour to Palm Beach’s new French bakery Paris Brest

Like peanut butter and jam (or jelly, for our American pals), croissants and coffee are a match made in culinary heaven. Delicate layers of buttery pastry housed in a crisp, flakey exterior, croissants are, in our opinion, the unsung heroes of baked goods. If you concur, follow the irresistible aroma along the Gold Coast Highway in Palm Beach to Sable on Palm and you'll stumble upon Paris Brest, the suburb's newest French bakehouse. The neighbourhood locale has been open for two months and has quickly found a following of passionate locals who cannot get enough of the venue's chocolate-almond croissants, sourdough and sweet treats. Get your morning off to an excellent start at Molendinar’s drool-inducing Bake House Gozen

Croissants have come a long way in recent years. A far cry from the heat-and-eat variety you buy by the bag, the new wave of pastry artisans demonstrate relentless obsession for buttery, flaky pastry perfection. Every step of the process – from the folding to the laminating – represents the perfect union between science and art. Maki Jinno, who many may recognise as the friendly face from the Palm Beach Farmers Markets, has been perfecting her pastry art for 25 years and has recently opened the doors to her very first croissanterie. It's called Bake House Gozen and here's everything you need to know ... more

A mad scientist at Coles has created Special Burger Sauce hot cross buns

If you quickly stroll past the bakery section of your local supermarkets as a means to avoid loading up your basket with sweet treats, then you might of missed the memo that it's hot cross bun season. These babies start lining the shelves pretty much as soon as the presents are unwrapped under the Christmas tree, which means we get at least four months of devouring our favourite Easter treat. To keep things fresh each season, the team at Coles like to whip up different variations of hot cross buns. This year, they have gone slightly left of field and have created a hot cross bun made using the Special Burger Sauce – and you could say we are at a loss for words. more

Beloved Sorrento bakery The Pastry Emporium unveils a fresh new look

As much as we love pounding the pavement in search of new spots to sip and snack, a lot can (and should) be said for the hard-working stalwarts on the scene. One such place is Sorrento's The Pastry Emporium. The neighbourhood noshery has plied coffee-loving locals and croissant connoisseurs with almost-too-pretty-to-eat pastries, freshly baked bread, breakfasts and specialty coffee for nine long years. As you could imagine, that kind of longevity takes a toll and the venue's owner and talented pastry chef Adrian Grazioli decided that the time had come to give The Pastry Emporium a fresh new look to ensure it continues to delight diners for another decade. more

Prepare thy taste buds – Cubby Bakehouse 2.0 has reopened so go forth and feast

Seven (long) weeks ago, Northern New South Wales was hit hard by devastating floods. Countless homes and businesses were inundated by an unstoppable torrent. One of its many bricks-and-mortar casualties was the beloved Cubby Bakehouse, perched on the banks of the Tweed River in the heart of Chinderah. The team did everything they could to save the equipment inside and get it to higher ground, but there was no stopping it. The floodwater peaked significantly higher than anticipated and everything inside the shop including the specialised baking equipment, ovens, fridges, coolrooms, coffee machine, was irreparably damaged. Faced with a choice, Cubby Bakehouse's owners Ursula and Ben Watts could cut their losses or they could rebuild. Thankfully they chose the latter and we got our first taste of Cubby 2.0 just prior to Easter. more

Coeliacs rejoice! Gluten Free 4 U has brought its mouth-watering array of baked goods to Broadbeach

For Tanya Filak and her young daughter, gluten-free is not a choice or a 'sometimes' dietary requirement. The mother-daughter duo, who both suffer from coeliac disease, have been left hungry and deflated more times than they can count after eagerly perusing restaurant menus only to find that dreaded little asterisk, *may contain traces of gluten. And they aren't the only ones. For anyone living with a serious condition such as coeliac disease or a severe allergy, dining out can be near impossible. A trip to Melbourne changed everything for Tanya when she sought out Gluten Free 4 U. She decided then and there she had to bring it home to the Gold Coast, which is precisely what she did. The round-up: plan a roadtrip to some of the best country bakeries in Southeast Queensland

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell were onto something when they sang 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'. There's no valley low or river wide enough to keep us from getting to some brilliant baked goods. There's no distance far enough, either – which is good because some of the best bakeries in Queensland are found outside of Brisbane. Heading on a roadtrip soon? Perhaps we can convince you to add a delicious detour into your itinerary with these must-visit bakeries ... more
