Encouraging such creative fusions to occur is the fashion-based artist-run initiative, The stitchery collective.  Growing from a group of QUT Creative Industries graduates, The stitchery collective designs and facilitates community-engagement programs including art, design and sewing workshops, clothing swaps, exhibitions and public education programs. Soon to recommence in 2012, the Sunday Stitch Lounge is for the ‘tea-sippin’, needle-wieldin’ chatty-type’ to bring along their own projects – be it sewing, knitting, embroidery, beading or crochet – and enjoy the company of like-minded lovers of craft and fashion.

Founded by Kath Horton and Paula Dunlop in February 2010, the collective consists of a group of artists, dressmakers, designers and academics who use creative practice to connect individuals and develop vibrant and inclusive communities. Combining backgrounds of contemporary visual arts practice, innovative fashion design, fashion exhibition and curation, and sustainability studies, The stitchery collective strives towards critical and ethical engagement with fashion amid broader social issues.

The stitchery collective’s studio and workshop space is located in the majestic Bell Bros building on Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley and a list of their community initiatives and workshops can be found on their website.
