Take a sneak peek inside Rosmarino – Fortitude Valley’s intimate new restaurant and wine bar

One silver lining that has emerged from the ruinous circumstances that plagued 2020 is the abundance of ingenuity and resilience displayed in its wake. Rosmarino – the brand-new Italian-inspired ristorante opening within a gorgeous heritage site in Fortitude Valley – is the brainchild of two hospitality veterans who decided to put their combined pedigree to good use when lockdowns stymied their plans to relocate overseas. Europe's loss is Brisbane's gain, as Rosmarino is now set to inject some vim and vigour into a long-neglected corner of town. Rosmarino is softly opening tonight, Friday July 16, as a wine bar – slinging cheese, salumi, focaccine and snacks ahead of the launch of its full menu later this month. We've been given a preview of what to expect – read on to find out more ... more

Unbearable Bagels – the new grab-and-go step-sibling of Zero Fox – opens in Teneriffe

There's been a bit of a stir taking place down on Vernon Terrace, Teneriffe's leafy main drag. Clusters of carb-loving locals can be seen swarming the entrance to Unbearable Bagels, a new attitude-laden bagel-slinging concept that opened on Monday July 19. The brainchild of a hospitality crew that has made a name for itself by doing things a little bit differently, here loaded bagels (stuffed with drool-worthy ingredients or slathered in a simple schmear) and black coffee are a specialty – and the crowds are already loving it. more

Ploughman’s new Fortitude Valley haunt is a go-to spot for craft beer, natural wine and snacks

South Pine Road boozer Ploughman quickly became one of Brisbane's most beloved suburban bars when it opened in 2016, forging a loyal following of locals living in the northwestern catchment of Alderley, Mitchelton and Enoggera. This year marks some changes for the Ploughman team, which is currently in the process of relocating to a spiffy new premises. While the bar's next home is in the works, Ploughman has opened a satellite watering hole on Hynes Street on the fringe of Fortitude Valley, giving long-time regulars and unacquainted blow-ins a spot to savour a selection of all-Australian wines and ales, first-rate gins, artisanal charcuterie and moreish toasties – yes, including Ploughman's famed gruyere grilled cheese! more

Take a trip to 1920s Shanghai at hidden speakeasy Cindy Chow’s Theatre & Cocktail Bar

Before it flourished into one of the world's largest economic centres, Shanghai was often referred to as 'the Paris of the East, the New York of the West' and was a melting pot of cultures, languages and ideas. At the beginning of the 20th century, the centuries-old walled city's nightlife was flush with dizzying splendour and secretive speakeasies – an equal mix of glitz and danger that is a far cry from contemporary Shanghai's gleaming skyscrapers. Fortitude Valley hideaway Cindy Chow's Theatre & Cocktail Bar is throwing it back to Shanghai's Prohibition-era identity, a shadowy-yet-exciting parlour offering everything from absinthe towers and Asian-inspired snacks to burlesque performances and swing jazz ensembles. more
