Southside Team Room has propped another feather in its cap this month with the transformation of the shop next door and a dilapidated carpark into a bar, craft beer garden and food-truck hangout.

It all started as a crowd-funding campaign on Pozible, which saw fans of Rory Doyle’s Red Robin Supper Club and John Patterson and Patience Hodgson’s Southside Tea Room rise up from cyberspace and pledge their pennies to help the trio bring their dreams to fruition. The Morningside venue, adored for its homely atmosphere, themed trivia nights and epic brownies, can now add craft beer and gourmet street nosh to its offerings. What started as a conversation between the three creatives a few years ago led to the purchase of a 1.5-tonne trailer from the Sunshine Coast last year, the campaign funding target reached in January, extensive renovations over the past few months and the opening of Death Valley Bar and Red Robin Supper Truck just last week.

Enter the bar via its Wynnum Road entrance or Southside Tea Room next door, and be greeted by a dimly lit space studded with tree trunk seats and ten persuasive taps. You’ll find eight occupied by specialty beers such as the limited-edition watermelon summer ale collaboration with Mountain Goat Brewery, alongside two alternative concoctions, like bourbon lemonade. Out the back, a bright-red trailer is dishing up street food such as bacon cheeseburgers, cheesy beefy fries, falafel plates and Vietnamese curries. The ever-changing menu will be dictated by season and market availability – check the blackboard for the day’s offerings. Rory’s experience rattling the pans at Pawpaw Cafe and Picnic, as well as his pop-up Red Robin Supper Club events, mean he’s well equipped to craft the kind of gourmet pub grub that goes perfectly with a pint in hand.

Keep your eyes peeled on Facebook as the team prepares to launch weekend boozy brunches in the coming weeks – expect kegs of single-origin cold-press coffee, Bloody Marys and plenty of hearty tucker. For contact information and trading hours, check out our Stumble Guide.
