Brisbane City’s Death Star Canteen is the cafe you’ve been looking for

That’s no moon you’re looking at – it’s a bona fide Star Wars-inspired cafe. Death Star Canteen is set to be a great spot to recharge after battling for or against the Dark Side, and the best part is you won’t need a tray.

When Eddie Izzard took to the stage to talk about the logistics of a canteen on the Death Star, it’s a safe bet he never thought someone would take the idea seriously. Coffee lover Glen Morris thought a cafe based on the idea of a Death Star Canteen was a concept just crazy enough to work and, like Obi Wan telepathically instructing Luke Skywalker to ‘use the force’, the idea snowballed in Glen’s mind while he waited for someone sensible to talk him out of it. No one did, so Glen took over a space on Queen Street and set about transforming it into what he believed a Death Star Canteen should be, with a few ideas sourced from Eddie Izzard’s iconic sketch.

Forget the cold metal Death Star of the movies – the canteen has ditched that aesthetic in favour of custom wooden furnishings from CAP Furniture and warm lighting, although a few quirky touches have been added as a nod to the iconic set design of the original trilogy. Finally, the age-old question of what Stormtroopers actually eat on the Death Star has been answered. Glen has created a concise menu of takeaway sandwiches stuffed with fillings such as olive and lemon tapenade, slow-roasted torn lamb, free-range pulled pork, corned beef, and avocado, tomato and cheddar, complemented by coffee from The Coffee Roasters. Death Star Canteen will look to add more to its food offering in the coming months but to start it’s specialising in simple, tasty offerings made with the best produce available. And yes, you can order penne all’arrabiata – peas are optional.
