The round-up: Brisbane’s super suburban bars

The times they are a-changin’, the suburbs are becoming night-time destinations in their own right thanks to a steadily increasing amount of hip hotspots. We have taken it upon ourselves to document a few of the best for easy reference.

One of the best haunts to spend a night out with friends is Morningside’s Death Valley, the uber-cool bar owned and operated by Patience Hodgson and John Patterson of The Grates. The dynamic duo brought Rory Doyle of Red Robin Supper Truck on board to create a permanent food fixture in the venue’s beer garden, meaning patrons can indulge in great drink and food without having to leave. Sandgate’s Cardigan Bar is a quaint venue that is the perfect spot for an intimate cocktail date, though partiers can enjoy great live music from local musicians. Tucked away in Ashgrove is Junk Bar, a longstanding suburban institution that boasts some of the best drinks in the west side, as well as amazing performances in it’s live music space, the The Skukum Lounge.

Cleveland is fast becoming a suburb worth travelling to for a great night of food and drink. The Bench is a dedicated craft beer bar that is perfect for a few casual throw-backs, with BYO food from neighbouring businesses encouraged. Gypsies Wagon in Gaythorne is operated by the owners of neighbouring cafe Hansell & Gretel Espresso Bar, and boasts a range of delicious meals cooked up in the shared kitchen. Wings, burgers, ribs and meatballs are on offer, washed down with craft beer, whiskey and cocktails. Over in Stones Corner is Shady Palms Cafe & Bar, a popular suburban haunt that boasts regular trivia nights, scrumptious fare and a huge range of drinks to choose from, while The Low Road in Windsor opens as a cafe by day and a happening wine bar by night.
