Neon-lit beauty Miss Mee arrives in Nobby Beach with boozy bubble tea and Southeast-Asian bites
Back when we were all bunkering down in isolation, things were far from quiet over at the former Hellenika site in Nobby Beach. For the past few months, the two-storey venue has been undergoing major transformative works – and just last week, the hoarding came down to reveal the Gold Coast’s newest Asian-inspired dining hotspot and rooftop bar, Miss Mee. Dripping in neon lights, layered with hot-pink decor and packed with personality, the colourful new arrival is bringing a dose of fun to the Nobby Beach dining strip – think mouth-banging banquets, live DJ beats and booze-spiked bubble tea.
The somewhat iconic site has developed a storied history – for more than a decade it housed famed Greek eatery Hellenika, before the new owners replaced it with Mediterranean eatery LOKI in late 2019. While LOKI’s tenure was short-lived, the owners were prompted to completely shift their focus and reinvent the site from the ground up with a brand-new concept and identity. With 200-plus seats sprawling across the downstairs dining area and rooftop bar, the eye-catching Miss Mee is a significant addition to the city’s dining scene – and a welcome one at that, having arrived right as restrictions on hospitality venues are easing, spurring locals to begin venturing out with a little extra spring in their steps.
Much like its predecessors, the neon-lit downstairs area at Miss Mee is dedicated to sit-down group feasts, with pink booths and larger tables setting the scene for share-style banquets (and cocktails, of course) with the gang. The once gleaming all-white staircase has been licked with neon-pink paint, leading you up to a completely transformed rooftop area, which is dotted with dining tables, bar seating, a DJ booth and a little more room to move (and groove). While the bright lights and colourful fit-out will catch your gaze, the aromas from the kitchen will quickly have you turning your attention to the eats and sips.
Miss Mee’s Southeast Asian-style menu takes a slight Thai lean with a raft of crowd-pleasing classics (think pad Thai, nasi goreng and massaman beef brisket) served up alongside less-familiar dishes like deep-fried pork hock, traditional ‘ma hor’ with caramelised mince pork, chicken and prawn atop pineapple, and interesting desserts like smoked candied-coconut dumplings with sweet coconut cream. The banquet menus are the best way to taste your way through Miss Mee’s offering – choose from five- or eight-course feasts, which both feature plenty of favourites like Thai-style green curry and the eye-watering chilli-laced sirloin. Plus, there’s also a vegan banquet menu for the plant-based folk. Behind the bar you’ll find an extensive collection of wines (including a few natural drops) and local tap beers, though a visit to Miss Mee won’t be complete without sampling a cocktail (or three) like its signature boozy bubble tea, served in a takeaway cup, with jasmine-infused vodka, Midori, green tea, coconut milk and black tapioca pearls.
