Eat raciones and drink sangria at Don Miguel’s in Southport

Stop in for a plate of calamari and a glass of sangria or munch on a selection of patatas bravas, chorizo cooked in apple cider with haloumi and stuffed mushrooms at Don Miguel’s Spanish eatery in Southport.

Six weeks was all it took for Michael Vázquez, the man behind Don Miguel’s, to fall completely and head-over-heels in love with Spain and its culinary culture. In fact, he was so smitten, he felt compelled to bring a little taste of it back home to Australia and opened Don Miguel’s late 2015. To ensure a truly authentic Spanish experience, Michael recruited some Spanish chefs and bar staff on his adventures abroad and rather than tapas, Don Miguel’s dishes up raciones, slightly larger portions designed for sharing. Contrary to Australia’s understanding, Michael informs that the original intent of‘tapas was designed to stop people getting too drunk so every beverage would arrive with a plate on top holding a single bite of food, hence the word itself is translated to mean lid.

The delightfully authentic Spanish menu meanders from homemade Spanish meatballs to deliciously crispy-on-the-outside-gooey-on-the-inside croquetas and of course, mountains of paella. Perch yourself at the bar overlooking the light rail and enjoy a roving feast whilst taking full advantage of the sangria on tap. If sangria isn’t for tipple of choice, there is a plenteous selection of craft and international beers, wines and cocktails to quench your thirst. Don Miguel’s offers a little taste of Spain right here on the Gold Coast.
