Pavement Whispers: rooftop watering holes, espresso bars and deep-fried street food

From whispers of new espresso bars to watering holes, The Weekend Edition Gold Coast is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Wildernis Bar: After recently opening Wildernis Cafe in Palm Beach, co-owners Andy Canfield and Josh Bailey have something else brewing – a new bar. Now, the two venues will operate under same Wildernis banner – but you’ll have to venture through a currently dodgy but soon-to-be pretty cool alleyway to get to the new rooftop bar. The boys, who both have a background in construction, have started works on the new venue, which will also serve bar and restaurant food – and if the nosh is anything like the newly opened cafe off Seventh Avenue, then we’re in for a real treat. It’s due to open in January, so keep your eyes peeled early in the New Year.

NXT door: Grocer & Grind’s exciting new venture is just weeks away, and as the name suggests, it’s right next door to its older sibling. The new venue will put a sunset spin on Grocer & Grind’s ever-popular wholefoods ethos, so think tasty, guilt-free and totally indulgent eats and drinks by night – and by drinks we mean cold-pressed cocktails with healthy twists like turmeric and activated chia seeds. Oh, and organic beer and cider. So damn exciting.

Bear Espresso Cafe: Local chef Michael Smith, who has the likes of the Sofitel and Hayman Island on his resume, is due to open Bear Espresso Cafe in late November. Located on Energy Circuit in Robina, the new espresso bar and cafe will be serving up a full breakfast and super-fresh contemporary lunch menu. Taking into account the owner and chef’s culinary pedigree, this is sure to inject a fresh new vibe to the bustling Robina industrial precinct.

Biggie Smallz: New food truck alert – Biggie Smallz (we’re digging the name) will be bringing a little bit of gangsta plus some seriously crazy flavours and oversized eats to the streets of the Gold Coast by the end of November. Think deep-fried everything. There will be Philly cheesesteak spring rolls, sweet corn and spaghetti hush puppies, short ribs, root beer floats, pulled-pork waffle sliders – and that’s just the start of it. We’ll put these guys on our list of food trucks to stalk (you should too). Owner Jemma Wickham, a chef by trade, is putting the finishing touches on what will be a pretty bad-ass street food menu, so stay tuned.

Espresso Puro: Opening late November, Espresso Puro will be the latest addition to Sunland Group’s new Marina Concourse retail precinct, which is taking shape at Royal Pines. The new Benowa cafe, which supports sustainable agriculture and environmentally friendly products, will be serving breakfast and lunch plus a spread of baked goods. Oh, and delicious coffee.
