Édito, a new boutique showcasing elegant European labels, opens on James Street

While James Street is already home to a killer cadre of fashion boutiques, further along the glitzy strip – up towards New Farm – sits a treasure trove that’s stocking some of Europe’s most sought-after labels. Édito is stocking a finely curated range of timeless, colourful and playful pieces for your body and your home. Next time you’re shopping up a storm on James Street, wander up a little further for some absolute gems.

Of all of Brisbane’s suburbs, it’s New Farm that, perhaps, feels most like a European village. Ask any local what they love most about the area and more than a few will say they like how everything is in walking distance. It’s one of the reasons Florence Ilickovic decided to open clothing, accessories and homewares boutique, Édito, in the area. The French-born retail guru has recently opened the store on James Street, taking over a light-filled space that straddles the boundary of New Farm and Fortitude Valley, just next to The Talking Toucan. For the past 16 years, Florence has operated OASIS Lifestyle in Airlie Beach, a beloved resource for coastal and resort-style attire for Whitsundays locals and tourists. With Édito, Florence is looking to showcase a curated edit of urban-appropriate gear – the kind better suited to metropolitan meanderings. I’ve been coming to Brisbane for quite a few years have always noticed that there was a little gap in the market for a mid-to-high range of clothing that was easy to wear, but special and independent,” Florence tells us when we visit the boutique. “I stock a lot of brands that are not available currently in the market that suit the Brisbane lifestyle and climate perfectly.”

When it comes to Édito’s curatorial ethos, Florence is relishing the chance to source eco-conscious goods from coveted international and Australian brands you typically don’t see on racks at Brisbane boutiques. Here you’ll find classic, well-made items that will become wardrobe staples, as well as decorative items that’ll add a unique touch to living spaces. “I go with my intuition and my instinct,” says Florence. “I would always say [Édito’s style] is classic with a twist – good quality garments that will stand the test of time, but they’re not boring.” Taking pride of place on the racks are pieces from quintessential Parisian brand Vanessa Bruno, ready-to-wear label Soeur, Stella Forest and Los Angeles-born sustainable jeans brand AMO Denim. To ensure that you wont spy someone else wearing your new outfit (and to keep the offering continually fresh and exciting), Édito doesn’t stock more than one of each size of any item. On the decor front, shoppers will spy everything from textiles from Caravane to colourful ceramics. “They’re very much a fashion interpretation,” says Florence of Édito’s homewares. “It’s fashion for your home – a complimentary addition to the fashion range. So it’s in the same spirit. Laid back, stylish, individual and independent.”

Édito is now open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday. Head to the Stumble Guide for more information.
