Iconic US-born cinema Angelika Film Centre opens a state-of-the-art theatre at South City Square
After a barnstorming run that saw the precinct establish itself as a dining hub on the rise, South City Square is now proving it’s got some cultural chops to boot. South City Square has officially welcomed Angelika Film Centre, a New York-born cinema concept known for championing arthouse, independent and international films. With eight auditoriums (each luxuriously appointed) and a cocktail bar perfect for pre- and post-film analysis, Angelika Film Centre is set to give the megaplexes a run for their money.
Even in the age of streaming, you can’t keep people away from the cinema. Proving that the moviegoing experience is as popular as ever, South City Square has just celebrated the opening of Angelika Film Centre – a 400-seat state-of-the-art theatre that spans 2500 sqm over two levels. Originally launched in 1989 in the fashionable neighbourhood of Soho in New York City, Angelika Film Centre is regarded as one of the most successful dedicated arthouse cinema in North America. Angelika’s Brisbane expansion – its first location outside of the USA alongside the State Cinema by Angelika in Hobart – is operated by the team behind Reading Cinemas, who is committed to maintaining the theatre’s indie-oriented legacy of screening the finest independent, foreign and specialty films, as well as particularly compelling movies from the major studios.
The Angelika Film Centre complex at South City Square is both chic and colourful, with a sleekly modern foyer furnished with leather banquettes and chandeliers given an edge via vibrant wall murals and hanging artworks that depict various iconic cinema stars and characters. The theatre boasts eight screens all of which are equipped with fully recliner seating, surround sound and high-tech laser projection. Three of the screens are premium SoHo Lounge cinemas. Those enjoying a viewing experience in one of the ultra-luxe SoHo Lounge auditoriums will be able to nibble on dishes brought to their plush seats courtesy of a table-service offering, while the SoHo Lounge Bar is amply stocked with beers, wines, spirits and signature cocktails to sip on while kicking back. Groups keen to dissect their film of choice after the screening will soon be able to do so over a handcrafted cocktail or two at the Highline Terrace, an enchanting balcony bar nestled high above the bustling South City Square precinct.
Angelika Film Centre is now open at South City Square. Head to the theatre’s website to see what’s currently screening.
