Stone & Wood has stirred up an Ekka-inspired strawberry-sundae beer and you can score some at its lockdown drive-through

Another year, another cancelled Ekka. Helping to keep our chins up is Brisbane brewery Stone & Wood, which has decided to help fundraise for The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation by brewing a strawberries-and-cream-flavoured beer inspired by the Ekka’s iconic strawberry sundae. Making it easier to nab this sweet nectar (and more COVID-safe), the team are opening up a special lockdown drive-through this weekend.

The year was 2020 and Ekka was just cancelled due to a little something called coronavirus. Worried that the Ekka’s cancellation would impact The Common Good’s 33-year long fundraising effort for The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, Stone & Wood Brisbane head brewer Mick Barnes decided to roll up his sleeves and use his beer-making skills for a good cause – and the result was the Strawberry Sundae Kisses beer. This strawberries-and-cream sour is based on the traditional Berliner Weisse beer and is brewed with 60 kg of Queensland strawberries, with lactose and vanilla added during fermentation to create a creamy flavour that closely resembles the taste of Ekka’s iconic strawberry sundaes. Now in a case of serious déjà vu, 2021’s Ekka has been cancelled again and like The Bride in Kill Bill, the Strawberry Sundae Kisses beer is back with a vengeance – and it’s deadly delicious.

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Stone & Wood’s Fortitude Valley brewery will be establishing a drive-through service so eager sippers can grab their favourite beer straight from the source – without even leaving their car. From 12:00 pm each day, the beloved brewery will open for patrons to collect beer, merchandise and 1-L sharers all in a COVID-safe way. The Strawberry Sundae Kisses beer will also be available to order in 1-L sharers so frothy fiends can get their fix. All of the proceeds from the strawberry-sundae beers sold over the weekend will be directly donated to The Common Good, to help fund health research with The Prince Charles Hospital.

You’ll find Stone & Wood’s drive through at 99 Bridge Street in Fortitude Valley this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (August 6–8) from 12:00–5:00 pm.
