Stone & Wood has stirred up an Ekka-inspired strawberry-sundae beer

Last month, we brought you the smile-inducing news that Ekka strawberry sundaes would be popping up over Brisbane in August. Well, fellow ice-cream enthusiasts, the news is about to get a whole lot better. In response to the cancellation of this years Ekka, Brisbane brewery Stone & Wood has decided to help fundraise for The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation by brewing a strawberries-and-cream-flavoured beer inspired by the Ekka’s iconic strawberry sundae. Très magnifique.

Worried that Ekka’s cancellation would impact The Common Good’s 33-year long fundraising effort for The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, Stone & Wood Brisbane head brewer Mick Barnes decided to roll up his sleeves and use his beer-making skills for a good cause – and the result looks to be quite tasty. Dropping on Wednesday August 12 at Stone & Wood’s Fortitude Valley brewery, the Strawberry Sundae Kisses beer (cue the 2001 Nikki Webster hit, please) is sure to fill the hole in our heart  – and stomachs – that Ekka usually takes up. This strawberries-and-cream sour is based on the traditional Berliner Weisse beer and is brewed with 60 kg of Queensland strawberries, with lactose and vanilla added during fermentation to create a creamy flavour that closely resembles the taste of Ekka’s iconic strawberry sundaes.

All of the proceeds from the strawberry-sundae beers and beer ice-cream floats (yep, the team are slinging those too) sold at Stone & Wood’s Brisbane brewery between August 12–16 will be directly donated to The Common Good, to help fund health research with The Prince Charles Hospital. If that’s not enough good-doing, the Stone & Wood crew along with their resident kitchen team William Wallace Catering will also support fundraising for The Common Good by operating as an official location to purchase DIY Ekka Strawberry Sundaes between August 12–16. We will be first in line, thanks.
