St Baxter brings a taste of California to New Farm

A Californian eatery has washed up on the shores of Brunswick Street, bringing zesty bites and American beers.

For New Farm locals who have been cruising along Brunswick Street and eyeing off the former site of Dell’Ugo with anticipation, at long last the wait is over, with Californian eatery St Baxter officially opening its doors last week. The new venue has revealed a fresh, bright space, the kitchen has fired up the grills and the bar has started churning its signature frozen margaritas. Pull up a chair by the massive gaping windows and soak up the breeze while enjoying a spot of Brunswick Street people watching and a flavoursome Californian feast.

Owners Ricardo Cruz and Sarah and Graham Waddell, along with designer Diana Pasovski from DP Creatives, have captured that carefree Californian vibe, complementing the beach shack fit-out and cruisy tunes with a menu packed full of spot-on street food, gluten-free tacos and barbacoa. Dig a fork into the divine kingfish ceviche with avocado, jalapeno, blood orange and baby coriander, tuck into spicy Argentinian braised beef tostaditas or wrap your paws around a mighty Angus beef burger packed with bacon, Jack cheese, lettuce, green tomato relish and kewpie. Desserts navigate dulce de leche ice-cream sandwiches with salted caramel popcorn and chocolate and chilli brownies with butter pecan ice-cream. Those who can’t decide can also take the head chef Sarah up on a lucky dip four-course feast.

Hungover heads will find consolation in St Baxter’s huevos rancheros weekend breakfast, Fonzie Abbott coffee or the house bloody Maria with a shot of tequila on the side, while weekly sangria Sundays will launch from 12:00 pm this Sunday afternoon. Classic cocktails are made on fresh fruit, Rocks Brewing’s American-style beers are available on tap and the bar can also shake up a mean Patrón chilli chocolate martini.
