Pavement Whispers: Volume 442 January 23

From news of a Nodo’s new bricks-and-mortar location to an opening date for an anticipated inner-north cafe, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Nodo Carindale
Brisbane’s beloved purveyor of gluten-free treats and brunch is wasting no time getting into the swing of things to start 2024. In February, Nodo will celebrate the opening of a brand-new bricks-and-mortar site at Westfield Carindale. Nodo has operated a pop-up presence at the shopping centre for two years, consistently selling copious amounts of doughnuts each week. The pop-up’s popularity made Carindale the no-brainer option for a new permanent site, so owner Kate Williams snagged a nifty location on the centre’s ground floor (right in front of Coles) for a new 30-seat outpost. The site, designed by Cameron & Co and to be built by Echo Projects Co, will be similar to Nodo’s new Everton Park location – expect Nodo’s full range of doughnuts, specialty coffee, Supernatural shakes and tight menu of organic acai bowls, stacked sausage-and-egg muffins and toasties. Nodo Carindale is targeting a late-February open date – keep your eyes peeled for more info soon!

Kevin
New Farm locals, it’s time. Kevin, the neighbourhood cafe from Sam Holman (Blackout in Paddington and If You Say So in St. Lucia) and Yolanda van Houtte (Drip in Newstead), is officially opening to the public tomorrow, Wednesday January 24. The dog- and pram-friendly cafe, which occupies a character-filled workers cottage on Brunswick Street, will be opening its doors from 7:00 am, serving specialty coffee from The Black Lab Coffee Co., fresh juices, smoothies and a full menu of breakfast bangers (think summer chai semolina porridge, ‘nduja scramble, grilled swordfish burgers and what the team is calling the Ultimate Katsu Sando). Can’t make it to the opening? No fear – we’ll be taking an up-close look at Kevin this week!

Baker D Chirico’s pop-up bakery
In case you missed the news a couple of weeks ago, Baker D. Chirico is giving Brisbane pastry lovers a sneak peek at its range with a pop-up kiosk outside its soon-to-open outpost on Longland Street in Newstead. From 8:00 am this Wednesday January 24, the pop-up will once again be selling a suite of breads, plus sweet and savoury treats – we’re talking vanilla-custard-filled bombolone, raspberry danishes, sourdough baguettes, rye fruit bread and filled panini sandwiches. Baker D. Chirico’s pop-up will be closed over the long weekend, before opening again on Saturday February 3.

Vasu Indian Gourmet Restaurant
If you’ve tried the Indian-syle high tea at Garlic Clove in Petrie Terrace, you will agree that it is one of the most singular dining experiences in Brisbane. In good news for those in Brisbane’s south, Sabir Merchant – the talented chef behind Garlic Clove – is bringing his highly praised offering to Rochedale, taking over Vasu Indian Gourmet Restaurant at Rochedale Village. Chef Sabir is bringing over many of Garlic Clove’s signatures to the new restaurant, including Garlic Clove’s Indian High Tea (complete with street-food bites, finger food, sweets and masala chai) and its all-you-can-eat thali deal.
