Bourbon Street brings New Orleans to South Bank

With the Southern charm of a Louisiana dwelling and the vibrant culture of the New Orleans’ French Quarter, Bourbon Street has opened its doors in South Bank, serving up Southern American-style food and an extensive cocktail list to match.

The creative team behind South Bank’s French Martini has opened another venue on the Little Stanley and Grey Street precinct – Bourbon Street. Gaining its moniker from the bustling French Quarter strip in New Orleans, Bourbon Street pays homage to the area’s Southern hospitality, specialising in Louisiana Creole-style food. At the kitchen’s helm is French-native Julien Fournier, who adds his own Gallic touch to the menu, whilst still maintaining an authentic Louisiana feel. You can start your Southern American culinary journey with traditional tomato Creole bisque, gumbo with smoked andouille sausage and chicken, or Mr B’s Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes. Mains include pulled pork with maple bacon and cider puree, red wine and port braised sticky short ribs with grits, and duck etouffee with herbed dumplings, otherwise choose from the daily list of po’ boys at lunchtime. Accompany your meal with cornbread or cauliflower gratin, and finish off with a mouth-watering traditional Louisiana pecan pie, or ivory cream with crisp biscuit and sweet Creole sauce.

Just like its New Orleans’ counterpart, Bourbon Street will definitely be known for its vibrant bar. Colourful street art is sprawled across the side wall, while behind the bar, old-timey signs warn patrons of pickpockets and loose women. Master mixologist Danny Avanzini has curated the cocktail list, including the signature New Orleans mint julep and classic cocktails such as the Sazerac and the Sidecar. Bottles of absinthe sit atop the bar beside sugar cubes balancing on silver spoons, ready to be transformed into the classic Absinthe Drip Cocktail, just one of four choices from the dedicated absinthe selection. House favourites include the Bourbon Tea Party, mixing bourbon, fresh mint, apple juice, lemon and maple syrup in a tea pot, and the Special K Martini – vanilla-infused vodka stirred with muesli-infused milk, nut liquor and chocolate bitters. When the weather is fine, take your chosen tipple out onto the custom-built breezy porch-style deck, exuding the Southern charm of an old Louisiana homestead.
