The French toast tradition at Anouk, Paddington

The French toast tradition at Anouk, Paddington

There are some breakfast spots where, no matter how extensive and mouthwatering a menu appears, you will always choose that same, favourite dish. Whether stuffed with sugar-coated fruit or topped with smoky slices of bacon, the layers of spongey, egg-fried bread on the morning menu at Anouk in Paddington are seductively impassable.

This ever-popular cafe has a strong history of producing some of the best French toast to have ever graced a Brisbane-based palate. Ranging from super-sweet creations to something of a more savoury nature, the constant inclusion of this indulgent dish means savoury substitutes like the Sweet Potato Bubble and Squeak, with bacon lardoons, caramelised onion and chili oil can fall to the never-tasted wayside.

Since opening in 2007, Anouk has served up French toast concoctions – from sweet brioche with juicy berries, dollops of ricotta and swirls of maple syrup, to crunchy croissant-based French toast with cheese and freshly shaved ham. The current creative offering is Apple Turnover French Toast stuffed with poached spiced apple, topped with mascarpone and caramelised pecans – a sweet, but not sickly addition to the wall of sweetened bread recipes.
