See women and wheels collide at Roller Derby Xtreme

Roller derby emerged for many in Drew Barrymore’s punchy directorial debut, Whip It, but it has been popular for decades. The contact sport first emerged in the 1930s in the United States, where it today remains its most competitive. The rules of the game are simple – two teams of five rollerskate in the same direction around the track, where you try to lap your opponents by any means necessary. With players renowned for their ferocity, this is a sport with plenty of tumbling, bruising and flaring tempers.

It’s been 30 years since US roller derby teams toured in Australia, but a return is heralded with Roller Derby Xtreme this Saturday. The creme de la creme of the roller girls of the US will be arriving on Australian soil to play around the country. Main players from super teams the LA Derby Dolls and the New York Gotham Girls will battle it out on court.

Big names to expect include Bombshell Betty, Laguna Beyatch, Suzy Hotrod and Bonnie Thunders. Joining them will also be the MC abilities of well-respected roller derby commentators Dump Truck and Betty Bamalam.
