Zephyr Tapas & Bar debuts a Moroccan-inspired look and tasty new tapas menu

Nobby Beach has been quite the hive of activity of late. The latest to steal the spotlight is Zephyr Tapas & Bar, on the corner of Lavarack Road and the Gold Coast Highway. The venue has unveiled an eye-catching Moroccan-inspired renovation that has imbued the establishment with Mediterranean charm and sophistication. The glow-up also extends to the menu and cocktail list. Read on for all of the delicious details …

If there’s one thing we know about Zephyr’s founder Jimmy Tantsis-Hall (who also owns Tropic Vice upstairs), it’s that he’s not afraid to shake things up. In his latest pivot, Jimmy has partnered with Medi Lababi to create a brand-new look and feel for Zephyr. Throughout his travels, Medi, who is of French and Moroccan descent, discovered a deep connection to the city Marrakesh. It was this inherent love for the country of Morocco that informed the new-look venue, which features ornamental hanging lights, exotic Turkish mosaic lamps on every table and a striking palette of pink and peach hues set against checkered flooring. Between them, Jimmy and Medi have created a space that triggers all five senses. “We want you to love what you see, hear, touch, taste, and most importantly, feel,” Medi says.

The bar, which previously ran straight through the middle of the space, has been moved to one side, effectively increasing capacity from 30 to 42 inside, plus space for another 24 outside. It’s not just the bar’s aesthetic that was given an overhaul, the entire menu has moved away from pizza to Mediterranean-style tapas that includes flavours from Spain, Italy and the Middle East. Zephyr’s chef Nicola Fomasi has sought to strike a balance between taste and uniqueness with dishes such as beetroot gravlax with cucumber, creme friache and Tobiko caviar, burrata caprese with basil oil and flavour-packed Moroccan kofta. If you’re keen to kick back and enjoy the culinary journey with a cocktail in hand, there are two banquets on offer, one for $49 per person and $79 respectively. In excellent news for the purse strings, Zephyr’s much-loved weekly specials have been retained, with pasta and a glass of wine for $25 on Tuesdays, Wednesday is a tapas special from $12 and on Thursdays, diners can tuck into a steak with a beer or wine for $28.
