Pour your own beer at Taps in Surfers Paradise

The long dormant space above Cocktails Nightclub has been transformed into the Gold Coast’s first pour-your-own-beer bar – Taps. The trendy new watering hole is the third in the Taps Australia family with sister restaurants in Mooloolaba and Fortitude Valley.

Once you finally figure out how to get up to Taps, you’ll be really glad you did. The ridiculously cool venue is dedicated to boutique brews, burgers and saliva-inducing snacks and sides (looking at you, pork-belly fries) and is pioneering the concept of pour your own beer so you can say sayonara to waiting in long bar queues. As you might deduct from the name and the giant keg in the centre of the room, it’s all about the beer with almost a dozen to choose from including 4 Pines, Newstead Brewing Company and Stone & Wood, however the selection will be constantly evolving so you’ll never tire of the same old tipple. If beer isn’t your beverage of choice, fear not because there are some pretty delectable teapot cocktails to try – our pick is the Beach Bum, with two types of rum, apricot brandy, pineapple, orgeat and lime. It will sneak up on you like a thief in the night.

Now, onto the nosh. Created by executive chef Jay Holland, the menu is filled with American-inspired beer-drinking food including burgers, loaded fries and crispy fried chicken wings. But before you go thinking it’s just your typical pub grub, Taps ups the ante with some top-notch ingredients and unusual flavour pairings. Start with a serve of the Tap’d spring rolls that are filled with gooey mac ‘n’ cheese, ground beef and American cheese before feasting your eyes (and stomach) on The Double Double burger – a monster stack of two wagyu patties and crispy bacon slathered with rich Memphis barbecue sauce, cheddar cheese, mustard and pickles on a milk bun. A serve of cheesy, gravy-soaked poutine is highly recommended. In terms of the actual venue itself, Taps is tailored towards fun times with a ping pong table, giant Jenga and Connect 4 as well as a bunch of board games floating around. On Tuesdays you can even battle the bartender in a scissors paper rock tournament for the chance to score yourself a buy-one-get-one-free burger deal. Oh, and if you haven’t already concluded this is one to check out immediately, on Wednesdays the venue does half-buck chicken wings (see what we did there?). There are also plans to host live original music on weekends so keep an ear out for that.
