When news dropped that the genius duo behind Easy Street Diner and Luckies Diner, Lucas and Erin Schranz, were opening a new Mexican venue, everyone stopped and took notice. If you’re one of the many that have been waiting with bated breath, then you can now exhale a sigh of relief – because Tacocat will open this Thursday August 3. Cue the tacos (obviously) and tequila – Burleigh is about to get an authentic taste of Mexico.

Lucas, a chef by trade, has labelled Tacocat as ‘Mexico City’ Mexican. Why? Well, because it’s not Californian-style and it’s not Tex Mex – it’s a modern take on traditional Mexican, which plays on the authentic flavours of Mexico City. So, you won’t find nachos on the menu – instead, you’ll find everything from marinated pork-loin tacos, to spanner crab tostadas with charred corn. Unlike the menu, Tacocat’s fit-out is (intentionally) anything but traditional. It’s fresh, bright and highlighted by pastels, cement and electric-blue bench seats. Given it’s a sibling of Easy Street Diner, you’ve got to expect a bit of edge. However, in a shift away from their other venues, Lucas and Erin have pushed the booze element at Tacocat. So, if you’re partial to a sangria, appreciate tequila or like the punch of mezcal, then you’ll be right at home here – because the cocktail list is just as big (and just as important) as the food menu. There are Mexican cocktails in abundance, as well as a bunch of Mexican beers, local craft brews, spirits, plus a tight and respectable list of wines.

As the name suggests, tacos form a big part of the food offering. The more carnivorous can tuck into a crispy confit pork taco with tomato salsa, pico de gallo and pork sprinkle, as well as a slow-cooked beef-cheek taco with bone-marrow gravy. For the meat-free bandits, there’s everything from a cerveza-fried zucchini flower taco, through to the simply yet tasty frijole bean and cheese variety. The tortillas are made from organic corn flour, which makes the tacos, and the majority of the menu, gluten free. The tacos are accompanied by a mouth-watering snack menu – there’s cheesy corn queso dip, crispy cerveza jalapenos with goats curd and chorizo meat balls. Plus, for the more adventurous among us, there’s fried snapper wings (yes, as in the fins) served with lime mayonnaise. Now, for those wondering, there is fresh-made guacamole on the menu – but we’d suggest you pimp your guac and get it topped with pork crackle, crispy chicken skin, corn crunch and cheese crisps … because, well, anything topped with pork crackle is a good vibe.
