Get your fried-chicken fix at Nerang’s new retro-style diner Rush Hour Chicken

If you count burgers and wings as two of your favourite things (hello, friend), go ahead and elevate Rush Hour Chicken to the top of your must-try list. The retro-style diner recently opened its doors in My Centre Nerang (conveniently just off the M1) and is the perfect place for a cheeky cheat-day pit-stop with mouth-watering morsels and bubblegum shakes that look (and taste) like they were created by Wonka himself.

Sure salad is great and all but if 2020 has taught us anything at all, it’s that life is too short not to indulge in your culinary cravings from time to time, no matter how ‘naughty’ they may be. Next time you have a hankering for something fried, instead of visiting the dirty bird franchise (you know the one we mean) for your fried-chicken fix, pull up at a fairy-floss-pink candy-striped booth at Rush Hour Chicken and feel good about being bad. As you may have deducted from the name, it’s fast food, but not as you know it. Rather than the same old not-so-secret herbs and spices, owner and chef Joseph Koya (who has been frying chicken for over 30 years) looked to his previous experience as owner and chef of an Indian restaurant for inspiration on the all-important coating because if there’s one thing chef’s of Indian cuisine know a thing or two about, it’s flavour. The chicken at Rush Hour is brined and coated with Joseph’s own recipe that has all the hallmarks of Southern-fried flavour with a tasty twist. Everything that appears on Rush Hour’s menu including the sauces are Joseph’s own creations and are made in-house.

You’ve probably guessed by now but fried chicken is unapologetically the hero here with wings, boneless tenders, nuggets, chicken pieces and bite-sized pieces of popcorn chicken all gracing the menu alongside snack-able sides such as mac ‘n’ cheese and hot chips. As for the burgers, it’s short and simple with three different varietals to choose from – the classic chicken, the mac ‘n’ cheese, or, the pièce de résistance, the hot and spicy burger – which is fiery with just a hint of something sweet, a nod to Joseph’s incredible knowledge of flavour. Thirsty? Wash it down with one of the venue’s famous shakes available in traditional strawberry, chocolate or vanilla, or go all out with the bubble-gum flavoured Fairy Godshake topped with wafers, fairy floss and sprinkles. You may as well, you’ve already committed to the cheat day.
