The round-up: Tasty tacos to sink your teeth into

Gone are the days when Mexican food consisted of some soggy packet corn chips smothered with mountains of melted cheese and topped with meat of questionable quality. Over the last few years, the Gold Coast has picked up its Mexican food game to offer nosh that is vibrant, zesty and packed with real ingredients and flavour. In honour of this wonderful advancement, we’ve round-up a bunch of the city’s tastiest tacos to sink your teeth into.

Southern Gold Coast, from Coolangatta to Burleigh Heads
Don’t be fooled by its relaxed vibes and paper towel rolls as serviettes, California Tacos is no slapdash takeaway joint. In fact, the lads are pretty well famous for their mouth-wateringly fresh tacos that are loaded with char-grilled steak, marinated pork, char-grilled chicken or crusted white fish and house-made salsa fresca. Meanwhile, a few doors down, Wahoo’s is throwing down the gauntlet for the best fish taco so you’ll just have to be the judge of that. Bin 72 at The Strand at Coolangatta and Tupe-Aloha dish up cheap and cheerful tacos on Tuesdays and while it may be the new kid on the block, Goodness Gracias in Palm Beach is certainly no rookie when it comes to tacos. The venue is the latest venture by Kristal from Pop Taco.

Central Gold Coast, from Miami to Surfers Paradise
If you’re talking Mexican on the Gold Coast, it’s impossible to go past Mermaid’s Bonita Bonita and MexiCali. The venues are regarded as two of the instigators of the coast’s delicious Mexican wave and dish up little parcels of happiness in a myriad of ridiculously tasty flavours. Byron Bay’s Miss Margarita has ventured north to Broadbeach, much to the delight of taco lovers this side of the border. For a quick bite on the run, swing by Guzman y Gomez or Zambrero but if time is on your side, sink into a seat at Gringo Loco Cantina and while away time with a chilled cerveza and a taco, or ten. If eating your body weight in tacos sounds like a fantastic way to spend a Tuesday evening, Stingray lounge at QT is the place to be. Indulge in seriously good tacos for just $3 each. If you’re up for a drive, Pancho’s Mexican Restaurant in Mudgeeraba is a stalwart on the Gold Coast’s Mexican scene serving up crispy tacos since 1980. The remote venue is cash only so make sure you stop at the ATM before you start the trek out there! If you’re lucky (or have excellent social media stalking capabilities), find Siguenos parked up in various locations around the Gold Coast dishing up delightfully fresh tacos. Munch on some house-fried corn chips with salsa fresca and guacamole as you ponder the impossible choice between the fish, beef, chicken or veggie tacos.

Northern Gold Coast, from Main Beach to Sanctuary Cove
On the northern end, pop in to Pickled Cactus for chilled vibes and tasty tacos. The pumpkin taco offers a tasty meat free option but for those with carnivorous cravings, all of your usual protein groups are covered.
