Pavement Whispers: poke-bowl bars, European eateries and homestyle Italian

From whispers of new European cafes to fresh new poke-bowl bars, The Weekend Edition Gold Coast is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Finn Poké
Almost a year to the day after opening in Byron Bay as the Shire’s first-ever poke-bowl bar, Finn Poké is (finally) bringing its fresh hand-made bowls of goodness north to the Gold Coast. American hospitality identity Jem Jacinto is currently underway with his second Finn Poké venue, which will open at Pacific Fair in mid-June. The new venue will offer the same menu as its Byron Bay sibling, with a few new twists – think fresh bowls of sustainably sourced seafood atop bases like organic rice and citrus kale slaw, topped with coconut-avocado dressing and finger-lime caviar. Salivating? You should be. Watch this space – we’ll have all the colourful details for you when the doors to Finn Poké swing open.

GG’s Eatery & Bar
It’s time to bid adieu to Grocer & Grind and NXT Door – the doors to the popular Broadbeach health-food hang and adjoining bar have closed after it sold to a local hospitality trio. The site on the corner of T.E Peters Drive and Sunshine Boulevard is now under construction to create a European-style eatery called GG’s Eatery & Bar, which is due to open between late May and early June. GG’s will serve breakfast and lunch daily, with dinner service planned for Thursdays through to Sunday. We’re told to expect a European twist on cafe classics by day, with the night trade to feature a share-style menu of Mediterranean platters, pizzas and rustic pastas. The impressive bar that formed part of NXT Door will remain as is, while works are currently underway to transform the building’s facade and expand the seating area. We’ll keep you posted with all the details on GG’s

Roy’s by Gemelli
Gemelli Sorrento now has a new name, a new menu and an entirely new vibe following a shift in direction from owners Paul, Alec and James Carney. The brothers opened Sorrento Italian eatery in May last year under the Gemelli banner, but a recent overhaul has seen the neighbourhood eatery rebranded to Roy’s by Gemelli, which will offer a more casual setting (think old-school white and red chequered table cloths) and more wallet-friendly food offering. Roy’s, named after the brothers’ grandfather, will be heavily focussed on traditional pasta, pizza and home-style comfort food – all still prepared with Gemelli’s renowned handmade finesse, but with a more affordable spin. The Carney’s other venues, Gemelli in Broadbeach and Gemellini in Nobby Beach, will remain unchanged.
