MADE barber & barista brings fresh cuts and cups to a breezy new outpost in Kirra

On paper, August 2020 was perhaps not the ideal time to open a brand-new cafe/barber concept, but for Josh Blair and Brit Westcott, the clever duo behind Tugun institution MADE barber & barista, it proved to be a bold move that paid off. Perched along Golden Four Drive, the espresso-bar-meets-barber has become a hit with locals who are keen to keep their manes maintained and energy levels high. Now, the crafty duo has opened the doors to a second spot a little further south. If you’re in need of a brew and a new ‘do, here’s everything you need to know …

An opportunity through a mutual friend sparked the conversation for a second MADE barber & barista outpost. Now, almost 18-months from that initial chat, Josh Blair and Britt Westcott have opened the doors to a breezy new spot on the corner of Musgrave and Miles Street. The venue forms part of the multi-million-dollar Kirra Point Project, which has already brought us a revamped Kirra Beach Hotel and the show-stopping new Kirra Beach House, with some exciting things still to come. While the concept is pretty similar to its Tugun-based sibling, MADE barber & barista Kirra presents a slightly more industrial vibe, courtesy of matte-black, concrete and minimalist surrounds. The space itself presented a bit of a challenge, said Josh looking around the quaint 25-seater, but they’ve made it work to perfection with a long concrete coffee counter framed by bi-fold windows featuring bar-style seating and a clutch of two-seater tables outside. This time around, the pair has outsourced the barber side of things to partner with Double Blades Barbershop, which is located just off to the side of the space. Rounding out the MADE offering is a sleek and curated apparel line that features its own brand alongside some well-known faves.

Okay, enough about the space, let’s get to the sips. Here you will find an organic specialty coffee from Byron Bay’s Moonshine Roasters flowing through the machines (a permanent fixture at Tugun as well), alongside single-origin batchies, cold drips and a selection of smoothies. The food side of things is geared towards a heat-and-hand-over offering, Josh says, since there’s no kitchen to speak of. The concise menu features four toasties, a couple of croissants and Burleigh Baker toast with avo, lemon and a scattering of sea salt. Those with a hankering for something sweet should avert their gaze to the cabinet, which is filled with some tasty treats including M&M-topped cookies and pastries. Made is now open for coffee and bites, with the barber available for bookings here as well as walk-ins.
