Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. These words have been drilled into all of us since we were little tackers. Though, sometimes it’s hard not to be judgemental when it comes to the one thing that is close to all of our hearts – food, glorious food. Have you ever stopped to think that the little takeaway joint up the street (you know, the one you’ve never been to but called ‘dodgy’) could actually have one of the most impeccably clean and safe kitchens in town? No? Well, don’t start pondering now – the new Eat Safe Gold Coast star rating scheme is here to do the hard work for you. Phew.

Okay, here’s the deal. Eat Safe Gold Coast is a scheme being rolled out by the City of Gold Coast, which awards star ratings to licensed food establishments that have demonstrated good health standards. So, who’s throwing all of these stars around? The City of Gold Coast Environmental Health Officers, that’s who. These eagle-eyed folk have been busy assessing all of the city’s food businesses – around 4000 to be exact. Those businesses found to meet the stringent standards of cleanliness and hygiene (aka the Food Act 2006 and Food Safety Standards) are then awarded with a three-, four- or five-star-star rating.

With such a vibrant and rapidly growing hospitality scene here on the Gold Coast, it seems only logical to make damn sure that the food-safety standards are world-class as well. What does it mean for us, the pizza-loving, steak-eating, noodle-slurping, cocktail-drinking population of the Gold Coast? It’s easy – just look for the stars. Restaurants, cafes, mobile food trucks and market food stalls that have been assessed and meet the standards will now display their three, four or five stars. Less time for stressing, more time for eating.
