Pagi Pagi Cafe brings specialty coffee and tantalising toasties to Ormeau

Attention northern Gold Coast – we have come across a hidden gem that’s well worth your patronage. It’s called Pagi Pagi Cafe and you’ll discover this charming newcomer in Ormeau slinging taste bud-temping toasties and ONA Coffee. Keep reading for the delicious details …

With a name that translates to morning times two in Indonesian, Pagi Pagi Cafe guarantees you’ll have a doubly good one. The Gold Coast newbie was opened in mid-June by a pair of hospitality veterans, Carlo Christo and Dinh Van, who operate a clutch of successful cafes in Brisbane (Salisbury’s Cups and Wells being one of them). The duo always wanted to expand their cafe operations further south, and ultimately it was the community vibes of Ormeau – as well as the lack of specialty coffee available in the area – that led them to opening Pagi Pagi Cafe in the northern Gold Coast suburb. Carlo says the venue’s goal is to combine tasty brunch bites and specialty coffee, which is a surefire winning combo in our books. “We’re excited to make the community excited about specialty coffee,” Carlo says. The cafe is a vibe, to say the least, with polished concrete floors, a large concrete table and a scattering of tables and chairs housed amongst a crisp white interior that’s lined with retro posters of salivation-worthy toasties (we’ll get to those later).

Canberra’s ONA Coffee is what’s pouring on the regular at Pagi Pagi Cafe, while a range of other roasters will slowly make their way through the machines as time goes on. The toasties are well and truly the star of Pagi Pagi Cafe’s brunch menu, with the toasted sourdough supplied by Brasserie Bread. You can wrap your mitts around the likes of truffle mushroom with mozzarella cheese, Kewpie and jalapeno salsa verde, a savoury-mince concoction with wagyu-beef mince, corn kernel, mozzarella and Kewpie, and a Reuben with pastrami, sauerkraut, house-made Russian dressing, American cheese and whole-grain mustard. You can also dig into the Pagi Benedict with poached eggs, your choice of bacon, ham or mushroom, onion jam and spicy hollandaise served on a croffle, or indulge in the Biscoff croffle, which is served with seasonal fruits, cookie crumble and vanilla ice-cream. Those on the go can nab a number of homemade treats, with slices and cookies gracing the cabinet, while The Bagel Boys’ bagels are available to munch on too.

You’ll find Pagi Pagi Cafe nestled in Norfolk Village Shopping Centre in Ormeau. Head over to our Stumble Guide for opening hours.
